  1. I can't remember the first, which is sad but the good news is it hardly matters because the rush never goes away. Wait until you catch a fish on a pattern that you invented.
  2. Being a teacher I am use to extending deadlines. How about Saturday, Novmeber 3.
  3. It looks like this swap is going to happen after all, there is still time to pick up a couple more tyers. Personaly I can't wait to get my hands a couple of Capt Matt's goldens they look killer. 1. dfield 2. Capt. Matt C 3. Trout Bum 68 4. Dale
  4. Am in, I think the handsome will catch a pike ot two.
  5. If I was a fish I would have to eat it. congrads on your new advanced status :headbang:
  6. You can find a sucker spawn in the data base. It sounds like it might be a bit much for your fish, but then it's worth a try. Sounds like you have it covered. Do you ever fish a dropper? if you do you might try a black fly as a lead or adding a soft hackle as a dropper. Sometimes the local fly shop can give you a heads up on what is hot localy it's always fun to hang out in the fly shop LOL.
  7. It sort of depends on the size of the river, what is in it (is it rainbows?) how hard it's fished, if the fish are wild or stocked and how badly you want to embarrass your buddy. For catching rainbows I would recommend a sucker spawn if the river is hit hard some egg pattern in #16 or smaller should do the trick. If you want to look cool try a bead head hairs ear or pheasant tail fished as a dropper below a charnoble ant<sp?) or a foam hopper pattern the size and color of your local hopper be sure to ck teh regs first as it's not always leagle to fish a dropper. If you really want to make him beg you to give him a fly go with the omelet. On hard hit water you need to get your tippet down to 6 or 7 X. ps don't wear that white t on trout water. gl
  8. I was going to ask the same question. I am not clear if there is a strip of shrimp foil down the lenght of the body? Would you post some step by step shots I would love to get a better idea how to work this one up it looks like a hot fly? Thx dfield

  10. Yes they are very effective flies on rainbows at any time of the year. When beginners ask advice about a first fly it common to recommend a bugger. Not a bad choice b/c it's a very forgiving fly and the strikes are often can't miss violent. The sucker spawn wouldn't be a bad recommendation, it's easy to tie and rainbows love it. When they take the fly I believe they have a hard time getting it out of their mouths and a # 10 scud hook is dam sticky, fish often hook themselves. I was wondering what everyone’s favorite color is? Mine is dark roe or flo orange. This is an easy and effective fly to tie. I can work up 2 dozen in an hour or so. Be aware that the die in the egg yarn is not very colorfast and will quickly fade in the sunlight. Store your flies and materials out of any light. When I fish this pattern I like to carry pair of scissors to trim the fly. I have a slick pair of push outs on my vest just for this. I also like to try to tie it as durable as possible. Each time you catch a fish on this fly you increase it's effectiveness!
  11. Adding the mylar "wings" seems to have doubled the takes I get on the fly at least to me. It could be the fish are taking it as a small bait fish instead of an emerging cadis or some think its' this and some think its' that. I am fishing it as a droper to a dead drift nymph an effective method for me.
  12. I just posted step by step pics and directions for those who would like to give tying one up a try. I am interested in what size would it be tyed in for steelhead? I would be willing to tie up a few @ a buck a fly if anyone is interested in giving them a try on steelhead.

  18. Two one hour sessions isn't much time to cover much. It will easily take the first class an hour to tie a bugger. Which is a great fly I wonder for how many of us that was the first fly we tied and caught fish on. What I do is first is I have them watch me tie one. Then we tie one together step by step. I start them off with some basic fly tying kit. They run around 50 bucks and you get what you pay for LOL. It really helps to build a little kit for each fly for each student, couple hooks, marabou, hackle, and chenille. If I had to supplement a basic tie kit with one martial it would be a spool of black 0/6 uni. The thread that comes with a kit isn't bad but beginners will be breaking it right and left. gl
  19. I got my Chase Creek flies the other day. Wonderful flies I am looking forward to giving those soft hackles a go and oh man what a killer ant. thx for share some great flies. dfield
  20. Well it might not be new but it's new to me. I thought I would pass this along. Larva lace is offering L.L. Interlocking Spools: 24 Spools that hold Body Materials, wire, tinsel, chenille, etc. for 6 bucks. I got 48 the first time and I love them so much that I got another 48. I wonder how I lived without them all these years.
