Anti foaming agent used in rug doctors at the grocery store. Its silica based thick solution, floats on top of water to stop bubbles. It also goes by the name Gunk and most of hte other floatants you buy.

A little off topic but recently I found out Tyvek is recylable. There is a company who contacted me to se eif he could buy the used stuff from our plant. I'm not a tree hugger but every little bit helps. I send him ours for free at his shipping expense.

Here is a good one for you guys. Anti foam agent. At the grocery store you will see by the rug doctor machines antifoaming agent to put in the machine. Guess what, that is the same stuff we call dry fly flotant. The antifoarming agent is a slica based solution that floats on top of water. Check it out, make a glass of soapy water and add a drop of your gunk or other silica based fly floatant. The foam goes away. Instead of a couple bucks an ounce you can get it for a couple of bucks a quart. Robert

I am suprised no one has mentioned the value of a tying club. Chek to see if there is a TU club or a IFF club around. My club (DRIFT) welcomes new tyers and we have a graeat time. Robert

The dollar store is a great place for tinsel and colored foam. The foam is usually cut up like a puzzel in multicolors Robert

What have you bought for fly tying in hindsight you shouldn't have. For me it was cheap hackles. When I started I went for more colors of cheap hackels rather than fewer colors of better quality. That is not my only mistake but one that still gets me as I grab cheap hackel and swear I will buy a beter one. Robert

Once you check out the Aunt Lydias you need go no further. Mike is dead on on that one. There are at least a dozen colors of AUnt Lydia's and I have never seen 1 store sell them all. It took me quite a while to get all the colors. A lot of Walmarts even carry this stuff. Robert

Closet thing I have found to Lava Lace is brand called Spagetti string. Same diamater as the original lava Lace, ect. It is found in the beading supplies. I haave lots of other types of subsititues for lava lace (different diamaters, colors, ext.) but as far as a direct comparson to the original Lava Lace this is a good one. Speakign of Lava Lace I love those holders you get Lava Lace in. Yes I also buy Lava lace. I bought a bunch of empty spools from thier web site to put other materials on them. They are reasonably priced. Robert

I saw that daylight systemj in Dick Blick's while Christmas shopping. It seems they are taking on Ott lights but for a whole lot less money. I have an Ott light and love it but I bought it at a flea market for 5 bucks as they were just getting started. I guess I should have bought more than one. I don't know if I would pay the 50 or so they want for one now. As a matter of fact when the bulb blows I would by this system rater than Ott (30 bucks for the bulb alone). The lenses in question is I believe glass but I could be wrong. They also have a real slick stand for it which puts hte light and magnifier on its own roll around base. Hope that helps. Robert

I would add paraloop flies. I don't know if it will stand the test of time like the benchside reference or hughes trout flies but I really enjoy it. Robert
