  1. Thanks! I'll go ahead and use the acrylic. When I am finished, I'll attempt to post my first popper so that I can get some constructive criticism from the pros.
  2. Ok, I just wanted to say that this site has been very helpful. Here's another dumb question! I am in the process of making my first poppers out of cork. I was told to use a laquer paint on them. I do not have any on hand; however, I do have acyrlic paint. I know the acrylic won't be as shiny, but will it still work the same? Will the acrylic shine up after I put an clear overcoat on it?
  3. Just a hop, skip, and a jump. Would it be beneficial for all skill levels?
  4. Skip48, popper looks awesome. I just started making poppers. I use regular straight cork for my poppers. I really like the rubber legs through the body! I'm figuring you use a needle to put the rubber through the body of the cork? How do you keep the rubber secured in the body? Any suggestions?
  5. Hey, thanks again everyone. Again, this site seems to be excellent and a wealth of info. twohearted: I am near Rochester. It's about 35 miles straight south of South Bend. I fish mainly small local lakes, (ie. Manitou, Silver, Nyona), for largemouth bass and panfish. I also fish for Musky at Webster Lake in North Webster, IN. Although, not with a fly rod. Every year we also go up to Benzie County Michigan (Traverse City) and fish for smallmouth. Eventually, I would like to fish the ST. Joseph River and Lake Michigan tributaries for steelhead. Also, I know the Bears are not doing so hot. But we still have the Cubs!
  6. Just wanted to say hello. I am 36 years old and have been fishing my entire life. About two years ago my 85 year old neighbor began teaching me fly tying and how to use a fly rod. I have been addicted ever since! I look foreward to using this forum. What an excellent resource! It appears that everybody is very willing to share their knowledge.
  7. I have just joined the forum. It looks to be very informative! I have been tying now for about two years and am being mentored by an 85 year old avid fly tyer and fisherman. However, I am confused about using wire for weight under the body of weight flies. Practically all books that I have read on wet flies use some kind of wire for weight. My mentor advises that the wire is used for trout fishing in rivers with a current. Since we mainly fish in lakes for panfish and bass, he claims weight is not necessary. In addition, he claims that no weight gives the fly a more natural appearance as it sinks. Any thoughts?
