  1. QUOTE (Shaq @ Jun 1 2005, 08:08 AM) No rules, you should see the looks I get from the blue-hairs at the yarn and quilt shops. Hey Shaq, don't know if you're single but craft & bead stores are good places to pick up some younger hotties. Great fly tying deals are available too. The unwritten rule in fly tying is not to admit that laundry lint on a hook would probably do as good a job as most nymph patterns.
  2. Most fishers I know have at least one 'secret' fly that they use. This may be shared with others but there is always the threat of painful death if said fly is revealed to outsiders. Perhaps a lot of people are using the same secret fly but noone knows... I feel like Kinsley So, how many do you have and how often do you use them?
  3. Its fun tying leaders and I make all my own. Some work better than others I've had good success with simple furled butt sections made out of flourocarbon. Turns over heavy streamers well and sink nicely. I just bought 300yrds of 2lb mono to try a more complex furl.
  4. As long as you know how to wiggle your woolly bugger, no fish is safe!
  5. Reminds me of the Married with Children episode when Kelly decides to get sophisticated and call herself: "Kelli"
  6. Yep, 9671's are what I use for bead head nymphs. They have the round bend rather than sproat like the 3906, 3399's
  7. I hooked a steelhead on a purple woolly bugger and it busted me off. A few hours later I hooked it again on a purple woolly bugger and this time I managed to land it. I took the first bugger off but it squirmed and broke my tippet. The next day, I landed it again but this time on a brown woolly bugger. I guess it wanted me to bugger off
  8. I fish for many species, including trees and rocks so I need to tie lots of flies in order to fish. So tying is also a means to an end as well as an end in of itself. This keeps me motivated.
  9. mhackney, your carrot nymph is one of two styles I've seen. There's another 'carrot nymph' made with a body of silk floss, and a peacock herl thorax. I've actually used your style but I based it on UK soft hackles. Burnt orange chenille was the body and some wraps of partridge. It worked pretty good on those red gilled, rainbow bass
  10. Ignore them BCT... there's a term that applies for such a "delightful lack of sophistication" Here ya go: Fencing Forum You can also do as I did and google "fencing forum"
  11. That's a great nymph! How about Pheasant's Harey Ear?
  12. Great flys Graham. Funny, I love woolly buggers and I love beads but I've yet to make a glass bead body woolly bugger. I WILL correct this! As far as breaking beads on the cast, I use a lot of glass bead head flys and I bend/ding the point of the hook on rocks more than anything else. It usually takes me a couple of missed strikes before I figure this happened
  13. I had a persistent problem like yours and I eventually figured out it was my mother-in-law herself that was giving me hives.

    Road kill

Wear latex when you pick up, better safe than sorry
  15. I'm a computer software developer but my physique, charm, grooming and fashion sense almost lead me to a life as a gigolo.
  16. #10, #12 woolly bugger in black, brown, pink. With and without bead heads depending upon conditions. We get a lot of roe bag users up here in Ontario and the fish soon learn to shy clear of spawn patterns once they've been in the river a few days.
  17. Panfish? Steelhead!! Some interesting hybrids can be made if you incorporate soft plastic bodies into fly/jig patterns. Just think of them as ready made gummy minnow bodies
  18. Don't know about 12 strands, but this worked good on smallmouths last year:
  19. Try a sequin on the fly or leader. Comes in various sizes and colors and available at the usual craft stores.
  20. Ah, one of my first favourite patterns. I tied some black/white with red thread for my first swap, and one guy actually fished with it up around Lake Superior and caught a couple of steelhead plus an atlantic before another steelhead broke off the line. Looking back at that tie, I can only smile I used a bit of 'magic tape' (opaque scotch tape) to hold one color of hair together while I tied the other. The tape isn't very sticky so it comes right off.
  21. It was $10CDN for the bag there. A good deal I think for that full bag. Green and blue was at 1/2 clearance price which is a fantastic deal.
  22. Went to Michael's to pick up some paint supplies for my 3yr old daughter and we also got a plush doggie for her and some interesting stuff for dad
  23. Just scored 4 packs of the iridescent stuff! I also picked up some 90 yard skeins of Caron's Jewel Box yarn. Its three loosely twisted strands: two colours of chenille and a floss. I finally got some claret chenille this way.
  24. I bought a pair of neoprene socks because of a slow leak in my boot foot waders. Keeps my feet dry and warm until I get new waders. I've heard of guys using a pair of wool socks over their stocking foots to avoid wear and tear. These booties might do a good job as well.
