Great idea SH! I tied this last year as my first and still only spey fly, took me hours

I have caught steelhead on a orange body/pearl rubber pigboat. I guess it looks like a chunk of skein.
-
SH, how about Viagra? Or if you believe drugs are not the answer, click on "The Minnow" video at this Mustad site. They use some foamy rubber stuff to stiffen up some tubing. The Minnow (how to tie video)

I had this crazy idea of applying contact cement on a sheet of foam and then dropping fine dubbing onto it, voila... shaggy foam

Hmm, maybe you didn't mix it thoroughly. I spend a long time mixing (30 seconds or more) and I make sure the edges of the blob are well mixed too. The Lepage's 5 minute epoxy I use takes a short time to turn into a gummy blob so I have to be speedy. So.... Hamil's Killer?

Fontinalis, I recently got a fly wallet full of old wets. I recognize a lot of the names on your list from the cardboard strips that the snelled flys were sold on. There are other unknown nice looking flys in a box. I do plan to tie some up after a little trip to the shop for some feathers. Also, I am getting two old bamboo fly rods from a neighbor of my in-laws. They happened to be collecting dust but supposedly in good shape and I am getting them for free! This summer I am going to try a vintage setup: boo rod and a Beaudex reel (modern line though) with some of the old flys!

Where's all the match the hatch guys? I like talking about, reading, and sometimes tying interesting patterns but I'm stocking up for this year and the bottom line is that I'm 1/4 way through the 100 woolly buggers I need

Its tied just like a regular clouser except the hook is bent: I got this style from this fly: I like the way it looks and rides. If you add some stiff mono as a lower, hidden wing, then I believe it'll be pretty weedless too.
-
SH, here's a better pic fresh from tank testing. Its easier to see that the eyes are below the shank and because of the bend, the bite/point rides low:

QUOTE (SmallieHunter @ Feb 24 2005, 11:05 PM) What side of the shank is your lead eyes on? The eyes are on 'top' i.e. other side from the point like a regular clouser. It's nestled in the inner bend where I bent the shank.
-
Here's my Baby Bass Clouser. The bent hook is shamelessly derivative of some British sea trout streamers. I tied off bucktail at several points in the shank for the fuzzy belly. Because of the bent hook, the fly has a tall profile, just like a baby bass p.s. the picture is at a slant kinda

what in the world could they be hitting???
fishyfranky replied to JarrodRuggles's topic in Entomology
They're hitting emergers, the scientific name is: Foodicus Pelletii -
There's a little known high stick nymphing technique I have heard rumors of. You basically have to cut holes in the ice around you such that you can continously "drift" around in a circle. I know a guy who went out to try it but I never heard from him again.

I just got 4 Plano 3701's. They are shallower than the original 3700's and have 34 compartments but are adjustable. I used to store flys on strips of 1/2" thick foam and I was contemplating make a big board of strips to hang on the wall but my wife said NO.

QUOTE (B.C.TroutHunter @ Feb 18 2005, 11:00 AM) If you play a wood instrument you will probably have some bore oil which can be used as a floatant when needed. Hmmm, I have a jelly but I'm afraid it won't be very good as a floatant
-
Hmmm, 3 whip finishes with about 4 turns each... that's 12 turns in total!!!! Yet again that number 12 turns up....
-
Awesome! I have a ton of that foam stuff from my last move.

A guy named Leon Guthrie ties some interesting patterns with a 'dipper vane'. He has a great imagination and I've used his ideas several times. Take a look at his patterns. Dipper Vane As far as the lip/vane is concerned, perhaps an inverted hook style would be better for greater hooking percentage.

How sparse should a clouser minnow be?
fishyfranky replied to kschu's topic in Featured Topic Archive
That's the great thing I found about fly tying: you can make and fish what works, not what sells. As far as the sparse/thick hair is concerned, I think it depends on a lot of factors. I'm gonna tie up some rubber strand clousers for this year. Who knows, it might be killer. I've already done good with an orange body/white rubber pig boat for steelhead... who wudda thunk? -
I've suspected 12 fingered aliens control us from afar. Consider: There are 12 named numbers. Thirteen is just three and ten merged together. There are 12 hours. The aliens must also have 12 toes to make the 24 hour clock. There are 12 months. The list goes on.

In about 1 year I've aquired 5 bobbins, 2 of them ceramic I need more because I hate threading a new color. They make good stocking stuffers.

I got 16 square feet of 1/2 inch thick closed cell foam at Home Depot for $13CDN Its 4 interlocking squares of blue, green, red, yellow and its used as a play mat. It also comes in all grey for use as a truck bed liner. Cut lengthwise, it should make anthing you need or 2 slabs glued (3m spray adhesive) will give you 1 inch wide floating goodness for killer musky jerk bait poppers! ps. let me know how it works, my 3yr old daughter confiscated the mats as I walked into the house.

Try adding sequins with a glass bead pupil. Gives a nice flash, I like flash:
-
I've seen it being used for caddis/grasshopper wings. Seems like good stuff, holds marker pretty good. I've got a whack of it from some CD-R blanks that came with it. I know computers stores sell the envelopes real cheap.

Graham, I really do hope you're joking. Using feathers greased with the secretions from the anus glands of a duck kinda grosses me out.
