  1. You're absolutely right. It is easier and fun to make them yourself and Floyd gave you some great information there. That's exactly the way that I do it also. But, the fact of the matter is not everyone wants to spend an entire night with a tea candle on a tv tray burning eyes. That is why you see them for sale. I'd like to give you one other tip if i may, If you hold the tweezer at the bottom of the flame instead of the top; you'll get clearer eyes and for tip #2, Go to a general sporting goods store that sells mono in bulk and get some of the "Free" stuff they'll give you that they've taken off of peoples reels. Have fun!
  2. Liquid Lace Chironomids, Liquid Lace Blood Worms, Liquid Lace Damsels, and Liquid Lace Mayfly nymphs, For the rivers, Liquid Lace "Egg & Eye" patterns and minnow patterns....
  3. Have you looked at he new "Nymph-Head Beads" ???
  4. This might save you some $$$ before you go invest in another vise1 Good luck.
  5. I can tye Deer hair bass bugs on my Norvise without any Difficulty. Here's what I did. Go to the hardware store and buy some of those soft rubber deallys that you put under furniture to keep it from sliding around and on some of my student vises I bought some of that rubberized matting (ooks like rubberized Cheesecloth. and set the vise/tying board on that . it really takes quite an effort to move the vise while tying that way. The other thing that I've gone to is the new jaw setup. It is the same old cam style midge jaws with the newly designed "neck" which is adjustable. I don't have any problems with these jaws holding hooks of any size that I tye which is up to a 5/0
  6. The Griffin Oddessey Cam makes a good Travel vise that'll break down into a small compact little unit. Randy
  7. If it's doubled then burned using the wing burner set, It wont come apart. I use the plastic version of the swiss straw. Also, when you burn your wings, be sure that the "veins" in the straw are running up and down the straw and not side to side. Look at the wings on my stonefly on my site and you see what I'm talking about. Hope this helped you. Randy
  8. I started carrying a new bead called Nymph-Heads . Their a Tungsten bead with small eyes on the sides of the beads. They come in copper, gold, black nickle, and silver. They look pretty cool. You can check them out at www.flymenflyfishing.com (Their website) Randy
  9. I only have used (still do) the Nor Vise Bobbins. I like them and they work great with a rotary vise. You can get your thread out of the way and bring it right back to the tying position with little effort. the standard bobbins have to be "rewound" after you take them out of the bobbin rests. Norm has revamped his bobbins and they work much better than the old ones and the price is still "right". I saw those Rite bobbins were close to a hundred bucks. holy moley , I wouldn't want some to lift one of those at a show...
  10. Liquid Lace is far superior to Larva Lace. There is no comparison. Once you get onto it, you'll be throwing all of the other stuff awy. It makes perfect segmented bodies from size 28-size4 Steelhead fly's. Just peak at his website at www.liquidlace.comand check out the pattern base. Ya Snooze Ya Lose...

  14. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by longears: Randy's Liquid Lace Chironomid
  15. I've taught at the 4-H's "super Saturday" for the past 4 years in my small town. I'm really surprised each year as the classes get larger and larger. I feel that is a way to get the kids involved. I'm amazed at how many kids want to learn to fly tye just to get invited to go fishing with Dad or their uncle. It's kind of sad in a way. The things that they can do for a fund raiser ins to have several Car washes at the local bank. The can solicit donations ($) from your local club. You're ocal club could have a mentoring program if it isn't full of old geezers like mine that have a tendancy to hate kids and think that all of them are bad. I'm sure that a few will help you out in this program if you ask them. Another group to help would be the Boy scouts organization as they have a merit badge now for fly fishing also. That help ya? Hope so... good luck.
  16. This is really great information! Thanks so much for sharing it.
  17. Ditto, I like to use a sheet of "bounce " and run it through thr inner tube several times. Hair gives off alot of static electricity.
  18. I still use mine as a travel vise. It is a very good vise that is extremely portable and can get compact. I also have one set up in my shop for students to try out as a beginners Rotary vise but, don't underestimate this vise! Griffin has one of the best Warrantys available on todays market. Usually , If I have to send something back to them it's No Questions Asked! I really think that they're a good bang for the buck and I'm always using mine while on road trips. The thing that you've got to remember is that it's turn the handle one crank, the jaws also flip once. The jaws have great holding power for most of the hooks that I frequently tye with. try one, you'll like it. my normal tying vise at home? A Nor-vise with the new (08) style midge jaws.
  19. There are alot of tutorials on the web on weaving fly's. just use the google search engine and you'll be amazed what you'll find. I could explain it to you but, it's easier to demonstrate. I found several sites with step by step instructions(and photo's). One thing that I find easier though is to turn the vise jaws so they point right at me and have them situated slightly lower so I can look down on what I'm doing. Thie weave in this pattern is not all that difficult once you get the hang of it. Just remember this; The green floss always stays on the bottom and the brown or Tan floss always is on top. If you look at the second picture you'll see how this is wrapped on the hook. Hope this helps, Have a Merry.

  22. skiperie, I love that avatar with the UPS woman in the new uniform!
  23. I believe Doug Swisher sells a manual unit.
  24. Again ,the customer paid good money to get a good product . The customer shouldn't have to kiss your butt just to have you back up your product . That should be your obligation to create customer satifaction. It should be your job to do everything possible to make the customer happy even if it means that you have to honor your own advertising claims and warratys. 'nough said... Like I said several times , I like the product just not the customer appreaciation. bash me if you'd like but, know that all customers are not treated the same. Who knows maybe Lily was just having a bad week. But, they didn't have to grind the jaws down when I told them I wanted to show the photograph of them on the internet did they? I would've gladly accepted some type of reduced rate on the new jaws. there were a lot of options open to them but, they didn't go there. When you're in business , it's all about customer appreaciation.
  25. I'm looking to buy my Mrs. a Hand Held Gps unit for her yto use when she goes Horseback Riding with her girlfriends. Anybody out there use one of these? I'm looking for a unit that is fairly easy to use and will work under a cover of trees to some extent. I don't know what I'm looking for so any help would be appreaciated. thanks, Randy
