I mostly tie my midges .. and I fish midges allot .. on the TMC2499SP. In my mind there's no better hook made. Yes they are expensive but I think you get what you pay for. Flytire is right .. the 2488, 2488H and the 2499SP have straight eyes which gives a better gape. I have a bunch of the TMC200R also and they have their uses too. I guess I just like the straight eye/wide gape better. Mike

Guys .. the post was meant as a joke. If anyone ever had a chance to look at the fly shop I call my apartment they'd see that. Besides .. at 6, 7 and 11 they can't wait to get started in fly fishing and tying. Mike

Sadly +1 I'm in that same boat but I have to explain to my grand kids why I'm spending their inheritance on what ever I do buy. Mike No explanation required or warranted: "It is your money. Use it when you need it." In most cases I'd agree. But with my grandkids that doesn't work. :crying: Mike

maddog48 replied to Crotalus's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
I have one of the Flyhives that I bought a few years ago before they stopped making them. It was handy at first but it may be time to move up. Mike -
I use it on all the zebra midges I tie. I mostly use the thin and have found if I take them out in the sun they set up even better. Mike

Lightning Strike hooks are made for a major fly tying company named Wapsi Fly out of Mountain Home Arkansas. If you Google Lightning Strike fly tying hooks, it may give you the names of some dealers. Mike
-
Do you have anyone that carries Lightning Strike hooks near you? Again .. not barbless but you can crimp the barb with no problems. That's what I've been using for awhile. They have assortment packs also. As far as hook quality I've heard that they are made by Tiemco and some say Daiichi for Wapsi out of Mountain Home, Ar..

The CCG does come in handy. I coat my Zebra midges with it and also put a light coating around any colored beads I may use to cut down on the color getting chipped.Works great for that. Mike

A soft rag, warm water and gentle hand soap works well too. Mike

Try glitter thread from Canadian Llama. I have 6 or 7 .. or 8 .. different colors of it and have used the white for quite a few different things. Charlie Craven and Charlie's Flybox has a material called Rojo floss which is .. from what I understand .. Oral B floss. That may also work for you with a little floatant on it. Mike

If you want to experiment with hooks try Lightning Strike by Wapsi out of Mountain Home Arkansas. I think thay are actually made by Daiichi. I tie on them and am slowly changing over to them if the style .. scud, wet, hopper, whatever .. is available. Mike
