  1. Thanks mark. I like the idea of having them pre-made.

Throw some Petitjean Magic Heads on those and you're in buisness :headbang:
  3. Thanks for the in-depth response :headbang: I read over it several times and think I have the just of it. I'll give it a shot when I get home tonight. Thanks again!
  4. I love it when that happens :headbang: Mark, In the description you have that the body was dubbed leisenrig style. What's that? If I'm reading your tying instructions right(great job BTW), you're making a dubbing noodle, tying it in at the tip of the abdomen, wrapping it foward, tying off, then reinforcing it with the krystal flash. Is that right?
  5. Thanks for all the hard work Will! Just looked through most of the categories and there is some really great work. I realized I'm on here too much cause I could tell who tied several of them just by the "style" they were tied. I can't wait to see who wins :headbang:
  6. Don't you know that Michigan fish are smarter than any other fish in the world?, DUH!
  7. I don't know about upstate yet as this will be my first season living here, so I won't comment on the body color. But my best Hendrickson last year in northern Michigan was a lot like "normal" hendricksons except I used about 5 marabou barbs as a trailing shuck. At first it sucked, but that was cause I was fishing it like a normal dry. Then I started casting it down and across, twitching it as it swung, and fishing it subsurface. If that didn't get a hit I would wait till the very end of the swing and then feed out about 2-3 feet of line adn let it dead drift for just a second. Soon as it started to "emerge" I'd start twitching and WHAM! This year I have a "new and improved"(why do I always try to make what works better?) version that I'm really excited about trying here in NY.
  8. Dang, wish I lived a little closer :ripped:
  9. I read once somewhere that it isn't good for the knot to stack the wraps on top of each other, since then I've always made sure to make neat wraps that progress toward the eye. :dunno: For most trout flies I whip finish once with 5 wraps. For big flies I tie 2 whip finish knots with 5 wraps each. For a beadhead like you're talking about I whip finish behind the bead, if theres a noticable gap I take the tooth brush to it and frazzle up the dubbing to hide it. I'm also curious what size thread you're using
  10. If it's what I think it is, it is awesome! I like to use it for spent spinner wings on real small dries. Something else i want to try with it is for an underbody material on some dries, just haven't had time to yet.

Great flies guys :headbang: :headbang: I've been planning to tie some of these for pike this year, they're so sweet looking. I'm guessing it would be pretty easy to slip a rattle in the head on one of those? :dunno: How do they cast?
  12. So far there are still a few glitches with recording the classes, hopefully when things calm down around here Smalliehunter will have a little more time on his hands to work them out. To be honest I would like to do 2 classes each week, the ones on Wensday nights and then have one either Saturday or Sunday morning around 10-11am EST. Only problem with that is there are going to be times when all the sudden the weather will be nice and I'm gonna wanna go after steelhead instead of teach a class. What about Sunday evenings as well as the Wendsday classes? Sunday would just be a repeat of wendsday. Any Interest? :dunno:
  13. I am going to do a 8 week series of classes starting February 7th through March 28th here at FTF using the Virtual Tying Classes. Every wendsday night at 8 pm EST I'll teach how to tie a warmwater and a coldwater fly. Each week will build upon the tecniques taught the previous week(s), the level of difficulty will also increase as we go. By the time fishing season opens up this year you'll have a diverse arsenal of flies that no fish can resist. Flies I'll be tying include: Bead Head Wooly Bugger Clouser Minnow Gilled PT Nymph Elk Hair Caddis with Rubber Legs, (aka Michigan Skunk) Adams Dry Fly( standard hackle and parachute) Conehead Barr's Bouface, basicly a Meat Whistle without the 90* bend in the hook Stimulator Variant(deer hair body) Crayfish Muddler Minnow Extended Foam Body Dragonfly Hairwing Salmon Fly, Rusty Rat Furry Dragon Intro to Wet Flies, Yellow Sally American How to Marry Wings Peanut Bunker stlye saltwater streamer Extended Body Dry Fly, The B-52 Umpqua Pike Frog And knowing me I'll be showing how to do all sorts of other oddball stuff along the way. If you're interested just check out the list of classes in the Virtual Tying Class Forum and sign up! Virtual Fly Tying Classes If you're unframiliar with the Virtual Tying Classes, check out this link, LINK Hope to see you there! :yahoo:
  14. Thats a great fly you've got there, I bet the Pike and Bass will kill it :headbang: How don't they stay? Got a pic?
  15. Yeah I can do that. What would you want to test for? BTW- your 8# Ande mono is more like 12#, and stretches like crazy
  16. I'm totally with atroutbum2 here on the Mustads. Although I haven't been tying for very long, I tie daily and I tie a lot. I started out tying on Mustad hooks cause they were the least expensive. Then my local fly shop started carrying the Mustad Signature hooks and a small display of Daiichi hooks. I got a few packs of each and didn't really expect to see much difference in them from what I was using despite the price difference. The signature series hooks were alright, as a matter of fact I still tie a lot of my spun deer hair flies on the Signature Series Stinger Hooks, and I am still using the Signature series hooks for my Trico imitations. The main reason I'm still using these is I have alot of each of them still. I'm sure when I start to run out I'll go to something else. I was really suprised at how much more it hurt when I pricked my finger on the hook barb when tying on Daiichi hooks. I don't care what anyone says, they are sharper. I am also pretty positive they are stronger too, but don't have any sound science to back that up, yet. Something else about the Daiichi hooks I have noticed is that I don't have any rusty flies in my fly boxes anymore. This could be cause I was more careful this year about not putting wet flies back in my boxes, but I was pretty careful the year prior and had a lot more rusty flies last year when I used Mustad. Another thing that helped convert me from Mustad to Daiichi in the end though was the price for Daiichi 100 packs of hooks. You can buy most models of them in a 100 pack for about $11-$12, and thats not even wholesale pricing. Yeah, Mustad 100 packs are cheaper, but I am more than happy to spend a couple more dollars on 100 hooks that I know are superior. Now I've still got Mustad hooks that I use for my own flies, mostly styles that other manufacturers don't carry, but just like with the signature series hooks I have, as soon as they run low I'll go to another company's hooks. I could be way off base here, but in my opinion Mustad needs to address tyers' concerns. This isn't just a handful of people who talk trash about their hooks anymore, it's a lot now. The only thing keeping that company alive is the fact that the have so many more styles of hooks, the fact that people are just used to using them, and their cheap price. It isn't their quality They are no better than Eagle Claw(sorry all you Eagle Claw fans) The other manufacturers such as Daiichi, Dai Riki, Gamakatsu, etc. are far superior in quality, it's only a matter of time before they make as many or more different styles and their prices come down.
  17. If things keep going the way they are I just might have to

I'm sure bigger bass would hit it, but I was hoping more for big Pike :headbang: I might just leave the hair long in that area on the top of the fly. Their heads are usually kind of "down" when they're swimming so I don't know if it's a really important feature. I think the big thing is those feet kicking :dunno: Should be fun to play with.
  19. #1 Ronn Lucas Sr. #2 Daiichi #3 TMC #4 Dai Riki #5 Mustad(only cause the vast number of models, I hate Mustad and will only buy them if a certain model isn't made by someone else.)
  20. How many pixels wide and high is a web page? Just trying to figure out what pixel size a background image should be top fill the page right. Thanks

  22. What are you posting it here for?
  23. I made this logo today with photoshop for my wife's parents' website. Basicly I just had my mom-in-law take a picture of the sign in front of their buisness and email it to me(900 miles away now) I actually designed this sign in Art Class my sophmore year of high school shortly before being banned from art(long story  ) So I took and cropped it so it was just the sign. Then I took the paint bucket tool and recolored the whole sign since it has been sitting out in the elements for 10 years you can see it's pretty faded and dirty. You can also see that my father-in-law spray painted out the area code since it was changed for that area about 5 years ago. Then to get the area code numbers the same font as the ones already there I created a new layer and erased everything but the number 6. Then I flipped it upside down and moved it. Then I did it again. The 8 was tricky but I ended up just doing the same thing I did with the 9 but only with the 3 then just using the paintbrush to transform it into an 8. Now I'll be using it as a logo for their website. On a side note I'm starting to feel like Will(no not short, just busy ) In no particular order I've gotta finsih their website, get my own in order, whittle away at a 50 dozen fly order, finish up some flies for an early stone swap, find a new job, figure out where I want to go to college, pick my son up from a birthday party, cook dinner, talk my aunt into letting me design some stuff for the B&B they are opening, finish up a material list for some tying classes I'll be doing, get new tires on my wife's car, get the kids signed up for baseball and soccer, get my personal fly boxes filled for this year, get a haircut, learn more about a few computer languages, and run to the store for a few odds and ends.

Thanks Daryn, I can't wait till you get a webcam and teach a few. I wanna tie this pattern with "baby duck yellow" deer hair and use some rubber leg hackle for feet sticking out the bottom. I'm gonna give Chris Helm a call next week to see if he's got some really long hair to help pull it off.
