jus got done tieing 4 or 5 of em with both rounded tail and regular, wish i had a camera to post some pics. But hopefully I'll be out tomorrow trying them out onthe gills. one more question... When you tie the rounded butt how do you keep the bilk down that's right there? Cause the couple I tied had some bulk and the foam wouldn't wrap around it fully and it looks ugly. Any pointers would be lovely.

thank so much!

BigDaddy love love the fly gotta tie some up, they would be killer at the local pond for some gills and bass. Anyway got a question. Can you explain the rounded end like the one in the pic above, also I see a little tail of some flash in there? If you could explain how to do that would also be great. love your flies.

For me it's always a good ol' bugger in various colors mainly black, olive, and orange. Also variation like crystal bugger, or rubber leg buggers. Went out today, wasn't catching anything on all these different patterns tied on a olive beadhead bugger, second cast 3 pound bass. after that is poppers.

I truly have to say that he has some of the best fly tying videos on YouTube. I always watch his videos, and he always is filled with information and help.

I just use sharpies, i like them never had colors run on me before, but looking for some other types of markers to use. So just vote. Give your two cents. And tell why you like the one over another. I made it multiple choice because i know people dont use only one type usually.

What is tha main difference between the Spartan and the Standard? They seem to have alot of the same features yet the Standard is $100 more. Sorry, NJ All Day, for hi-jacking your thread. Hey I already decided I'm gonna get the Spartan. What ever questions you have to help you decide, go right ahead and ask away.

sounds great tell you when it gets here. I'm just so pumped for this swap!!!

My father and I were planning a trip up to The Farmington River in Connecticut. And have some questions. What were your experiences like? Where did you stay? like what towns? Are there camp grounds by the river? Is it fly fish only? The old man dosent fly fish so we a spot where he can also go. Any other info for this would be great.

Do you have white thread and just color it with a red sharpie...

No more so than any other vise you adjusted in a similiar fashion. Not much point in doing this, however, unless you are tying something like a Clouser. If crowding is an issue, leave it in original configuration. If you need to tie in a rotary fashion, get a true rotary vise. YMMV. I always have my hmh level even when I tie nymphs. {snip} Well, you're doing it wrong. You may be comfortable using your vise on the horizontal, but you are actually minimizing the amount of space between the vise and the hook, when one usually seeks to maximize the amount of space. If you've found this to be an effective method, then carry on. If you have your vise properly adjusted, you would maximize the amount of clearance between the hook and the vise by removing the vise altogether from the calculation. Doesn't matter for all patterns, but I prefer not to have to adjust my vise at all when I tie so I just leave it at a 30 degree head angle which maximizes rear clearance. Regardless, reread what I said. If you want to tie rotary, get a rotary vise. If you merely want to rotate the vise head, then any standard well made vise will serve. since when did some write a book saying that your tieing right or wrong? If he finds the most room by having it level then that's the way he's comfortible he's not wrong he likes it like that. Anyway I'm canging my mind and gonna buy the HMH.

Thanks guys, but i'm taking an electrical class in high school, and my teacher is super cool and fellow fly tyer, he has a bunch of stranded wire that is the perfect thickness. Now I have enough for life.

Hello there, I was watching some of DavieMcPhail's fly tying videos which are great. Now he ties his PTN with copper wire, and I want to buy it in bulk cause you go through a lot of wire, so I was just wondering if anyone knows of a place to buy bulk copper wire with an equivalant size to UTC extra small.

That's it I'm gonna get the Dyna King sounds lkr a great vise and I don't think i be tying to many 20's and down, I usally tie bass and bluegill flies. Size 16-2 so Dyna King sounds great.
-
I think i'll go with the Dyna King. Also what would be a good PEAK vise?
-
Thanks this will be helpfull for many people. Maybe one of the mods can pin this so it's easier to get to.

Hey there i've been thinking about getting a new vise for my birthday in a couple months. When ever i buy something i always do my homework and try to pick the best item within my budget. And what better place to pick than to get the pro's and con's and people's opinion from people that have actually used them. My budget is 200 dollars and right now i'm stuck between The HMH Spartan Vise and The Renzetti Traveler vise. I like the Spartan because it is simple looking without all those bells and whistles that can eventually break, and it looks pretty sturdy. Also i like how it is also rotary. I like the Renzetti because it also dosent have as many parts that can break, also it is rotary and it looks like changing the hooks might be easier. I just wanted every one's opinion if you have used either of them just add what you like and what you dont like. Also if you know any other good vises for $200 or under would be great. Thanks.

I really like the second one. Great tieing
