You may also want to find a Hobby Shop. If I remember correctly the one I sue to frequent in Houston sold some...Not sure if they do now. The other thing is that Try Googleing Tackle Manufactures. There was a company that I used to get cork from that had that kind of stuff. If my Dad answers the phone after the Race will let ya know. He still has all the catalouges "Just in case" even though we quit the Biz years ago. good luck!

I just made up a list for my Dad. Things that I need him to send me so that I can tie up some stuff and that was left out of my goodie box. And it got me to thinking on how resorcefull we as fly tyers can actully be. Esp with the materials but also in the tool department... Here are some of the Doo Dads that I have accumulated over the years that I use for tying.. Sewing needles- If they bend the wont work on the sewing machine...but they are great for applying little drops of head cement. Small craft nails- Making Eyes on Thunder Creek Minnows. Started doing this while making spinner baits. Cut of the sharp parts and i actually have a nice selection of sizes to do various size eyes. have actually used needles also. Emory boards- Ok..mom used to get really hacked when i would take these. great for shaping cork for poppers. I actually would split and glue wine corks on hooks. yup..did it the "Old School" way. Split ring pliers- I never could use a whip finisher. countles ones have ended up being thrown so i just do the half hitch method. if my fingers arent behaving i just grab my small split ring pliers and use the part that has the little nib on them and off i go. The Chopper- One hobby feeds another..This is a tool that is used by model railroaders to cut little peices of wod and plastic while building things. I use it to cut things to the same size..Chennel, floss, lead wire. it uses a single blade razor and it is replaceable. The True Sander- another one of my ummmm rail road toys. I use it for getting the angle just right on poppers that are cork. Guitar String- Ever loose your bobbin threader? I gave up buying them. so I snagged one of my little brothers guitar strings. the smallest one. ( I dont play just use em..lol) I formed a little bend in it. wrap a piece of thread around it and just pull the thing thru. IDK it works...lol.. Most of these have come about working really late getting flys done and loosing stuff that was needed...ok..so the cats take off with stuff from the room from time to time..thier way of getting back from the use of clippers and such..Come on..you have done it..lol...but like i said..late nights and WAY to much coffee is what made me do some of this. Most of the time it was like...I wonder if this will work....and when it does u go..dang..thats a lot eisier!!!! So..whats some of your tools?

I just use a good sharp Xacto knife. I use a strait edge (I picked mine up at a flea market) that is made of metal. Mine is the ruler part from a square. then make a few passes till its through the hide. Doing it like this allows me to mark the skin and do the cuts. It is a little time consuming but I usually cut about 10 strips that are at least 6" long. I also use a mustache comb or my cats flea combs to get out all the loose under fur and save it for dubbing. so its a sorta a bounus.

I would have never thought of that! thanks saltydog! guess I am gonna have to save some "brass" from Stress Relief...i mean Prairie dog huntin....hmmmm..wonder if PD fur is usefull to any flies?
-
thanks for showing us that. Am going to start tying those up tomorrow i think...off to the toy store for more goodies! lol

I have one box. For now. The way I organize mine is pretty simple. One side has Nymphs, drys and wets the other side holds my Streamers and such. I usually put them in order from small to large from left to right. I am hoping to get a few more boxes though this year as I start tying a bit more. When I do it will then be one for wets dries nymphs, streamers and terrestrials. The other thing I do is if possible is if the box is plastic. I use some model railroad glue called plastistrut to actually put a plastic loop for a lanyard on the box. This stuff actually welds the plastic to the box. No more giving boxes to the Trout Gods of the Rivers! If they are foam...well...I use a needle and Thread and some old 550 parachute cord and sew in a loop. stuf doesnt rot or mildew so it is perfect. may look wierd but hey. i dont loose my boxes! lol

I am still working off the rust on my tying but would be willing to donate my time when I have it. I am not far from the Green here in Utah. I hold any Vetrans programs dear to my heart as both my Father and Brother are listed as DV now. If you could PM me with details on how I could be of help! Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention

Futzer, Had the TV Tray Tying Station Deluxe modle when I lived in Texas. it was a combanation Fly tying and Spinner/buzz/ bait and Jig Station. fit perfect in the down Stairs Bathroom. But alas. Was lost to my Dad when I left GA. You know when you are tying to much. When the GF comes and just turns the light off on you and Yells...PUT YOUR TOYS UP!!!!! Its time for bed!!!! or your GF comes and says in a sing song voice....honey..please put your feathers and hides up...its time for bed darling. when your on pain pills and you just have to try this pattern that you found online....however...putting the hook in the vise is beyond your ability and you must call for "Honey" for help.

My GF read this and said what a novel idea!!!! Crap! what i get for reading these when she is sitting right next to me! People ask you what you want for christmas and all you can think of is a Gift Certificate for your favorite toy store. You dream about winning the Lotto, So you can build your dream tying room and desk compleate with mini fridge and food nuker, big screen TV, and a tiny little bathroom so you really dont have to go anywhere.
-
that you are told to clean off the table orI WILL by your GF... (trust me...YOU want to do the cleaning!) That Muddler Minnows are in your nightmares saying..tie me...tie me!!!! knowing full well that you cant tie one to save your life You wake up. grab a cup of coffee and sit on your hooks.( lesson learned..put the hooks on the table!)
-
easy to tie: blue Gill bug. fairly simple to tie. used to get the big blue gills at a small pond i fished in texas. trout: Wooly buggers. another fairly easy to tie pattern Bass: Ugly Fry...My Version of the thunder creek minnow. seems that the Uglier the tie the more productive the fly.

I must admit I am guilty of some of these! Here is a few more though. You can tell your tying to much when... Your mom askes "Why do you brush the Cat EVERY night?" When you have customers asking for your best fly and you have to tell them that the fly is no longer available at the moment due to the fact that the Cat is not in this life. (true story) When your GF is looking at you funny as you read this and Gets IDEAS!!! (ie...where is my saddle hackles!!!!) When you GF wants you to go to bed and says hint hint and your clueless cause your reading this post.. When you pause and stop a video on fly tying so much that it crashes your computer (um...actually did this saturday) When your parents ask if they can send you anything, you ask for your tying stuffthat is in the basement storage When at night your GF is mentioning fly tying materials, lighter fluid and bonfire in her sleep ...still trying to figure this one out. When you propose to the love of your life..u substitute the Diamond for a beutifully tied #20 CDC Elk tied by Hans Your mom wants to know where her nice new feather earings are and u just whistle. When the neighbors have pecocks and you drive by really fast in the hopes that one is out in the road that day You drool over certain roadkills When you tell your GF that Fly fishing and tying are a lot safer than bull riding so you can get that new Rotary Vise you have been waiting years to get.

I need patterns with turkey feathers!!!
lytle replied to smalltownfisherman's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
As futzer said. Put em in the freezer first! The other thing is. Depending on where you live you could make a quick buck selling them to Rodeo guys. bull riders and Bronc riders are always looking for nice turkey Feathers for thier hats....I know I always did! Have fun tying!
