the flyshop also has good store name hooks for a good price. ive used all the 2x strong hooks for steelhead & the bass, saltwater, jig, shad hooks with good success.

i have a drawer with old flies, bad flies, new flies that have sat in my box to long without ever being used. i have a few friends who come in drop everything go right to the drawer and start picking through it. i also will reclaim beads/cones at times even a few hooks if i need a certin size or style for a days fishing.

i make a shiner pattern called trusty rusty compleatly out of silver angel hair. the back can be colored with a marker if you wanted a two-toned effect. i super glue the eyes on then trim out the fibers between the eyes on the bottom of the fly. i put a large glob of epoxy between the eyes in the throat area where i have trimmed. not only does this hold the eyes in place but it adds weight gives the fly, a jigging motion and helps keel the fly. i always fish this fly with an open loop knot. you could easily adapt my fly to a large saltwater fly.

damn that dude can handle his materials. what kind of stuff did he make the head out of. it was simple & fast. i dont think i would have trimmed it. i liked the segmented steps it was making as he wrapped it.

Getting ready for FL Largemouth Season
bad fish rising replied to JJD's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
very nice fly! it should catch any big predator fish. if you guys like to see the bite most topwater guys do try an intermediate line. they fish just below the surface you can track your fly and see the fish coming. -
sowbugs are definately flat. the scuds i see here are always on their sides im not sure if they drift like that or what. both flies i use are tied on wetfly hooks not scud hooks because scud hooks flip over so easy and im sure scuds/sowbugs never ride upside down.
-
i like olive scuds but my second choice is a grey sowbug a great fly here in michigan for steelhead

I also cast an 8wt. Ticr x . including the switch line I throw a 24' 300gr. Dc rio line. I've been looking into furled leaders from feathercraft so I will take your advice and buy a few. I already know about the single shoot double haul or eat the fly. I use flies like your for huge brown trout
-
What kind of 10wt line are you throwing on your 8wt rod? Is it like a pike line that floats or is it a sink tip? I've been using a 290gr switch indicator taper for huge articulated flies but it doesn't lay them out very well at distance.

The ones I bought like that had some small tubing in the pack I put some glue in the tube then stuck the eyes in both ends. When tied on like any other barbell eye these made very wide heads when covered with wool imatating sculpin very well

Small game liscence will get you a crow which has awesome soft hackle as well as wings. If you look into a trapping club ask if they have any skunks that were caught in log traps over water they tend not to smell as bad

I really like the red phesant crests
