I'll definitiely enter!!!! I'll probably be running to the post office the day of the deadline......I actually haven't tied anything in quite awhile......I had surgery on my hand right before xmas to re-attach a ligament to my thumb....it hasn't taken very well, I think I may have to have a 2nd surgery on it.......oh well.... If you have never entered, I would encourage you to do so!!!!! My flies have never won, nor quite frankly, will they ever win.......but it is still a lot of fun to participate......think about it! Mike
  2. Steve, I throw my stuff in the freezer for a few days, take it out thaw it out.....refreeze for a few more days....take it out and put it in some sort of air tight container (tupperware or ziploc) and toss in moth balls.....I put in new mothballs every couple months.....never had a problem. Mike
  3. I saw them on their "Moving Pictures" Tour..........early 80's.......maybe late 70's..... :dunno:
  4. :headbang: Very Nice! I have got to get back down that way some day......... Mike
  5. I'm envious! I was there last Summer.....I had a lot of luck w/olive bunny strip leeches.....fwiw, the water is very clear but stained brown from tannin......walleyes, northerns, smallies all have a more brownish tinge to them than what I am used to seeing in my area, keep that in mind when tying flies. The fish should be relatively shallow that time of year still. Like Mike said, bring some topwater poppers/sliders/deerhair bugs w/you. We had our best luckon the 'eyes early morning late evening fishing the bottom (10-15') anywhere a creek/river dumps into the lake. the guys used live leeches, I used bunny strips and buggers w/a sinking line. Next time I go, I am going to bring a rod holder.....I did a lot of trolling as we paddled, just tucked my flyrod under my knee and picked up a few northerns this way......also kept a rod rigged for the portages in case we had a wait....good time of year to go for fishing.....bad time for black flies/ticks! bring a head net! Mike A. oh yeah...bring plenty of flies.....I hung quite a few up on rocks and a few bite offs.....

    grass carp?

I have a private pond nearby that I have access to and after being overrun w/weeds by mid-summer, the owners contracted w/a pond management company who came in and placed 6 grass carp in it a couple years ago.....I have never targeted them, but hooked one on my 5 wt one summer fishing for gills w/a generic nymph pattern......what a battle! I eventually landed him guesstimated him to be about 10 #'s.....he was probably one of the smaller ones in there......there are 2 that look like small gators..... Good Luck! Mike

    Pike tippet

I am far from an expert.....I spent a week in N. Mn last Summer fishing for them and used some Mason hard mono for a tippet (25#) and had no bite-offs on it.....I would check after every fish though and if there was any fraying, I changed it. I got that recommendation off someone on this site...... Mike
  8. Welcome Aboard! :headbang: Mike
  9. Will, your lucky you went up early!!!!! We have a foot of snow so far with more predicted thru the day today(Saturday) I have 3' drifts in my backyard! We have been under a Blizzard warning since 3:00pm Friday w/30-50 mph winds I-75 is shutdown just N of Dayton.......hopefully be clear enough for you to get home tomorrow..... Mike
  10. There was a pretty good discussion a couple years ago....as I recall, one of the tricks mentioned was to use a crocheting(I think that is what it was, maybe it was a needle point) hoop to stretch the skin...... Mike
  11. Is the cabin finished? how about some pic.s!!!!! :headbang:
  12. Yes, GSP is gel spun and it does make a big difference.......of course so does the right deer hair....I would recommend contacting Chris Helm @ http://www.whitetailflytieing.com/ he is a really nice guy and one of the best when it comes to deer hair. He hand picks and cures all of his own hides.....I buy all of my deer hair supplies from him.....having the right materials makes a big difference. He has several instructional DVD's out on working w/deer hair....well worth the money. If you give him a call and tell him what you are trying to tie, he will set you up w/what you need. Good Luck!

    hi

    welcome aboard!
  15. As if you don't have enought tying to do already.......these periodical cicadas are due to appear this year in the Midwest.....they may not quite reach me, but southern Ohio should see them! Here is a distribution map: http://insects.ummz.lsa.umich.edu/fauna/mi...l/BroodXIV.html Here is a page with photos of someof Brood XIV that hatched a year early: http://www.cicadamania.com/cicadas/category/brood-xiv/ From past experience, when a Brood of this size hatches, all species of fish lock in on them, I've seen catfish/carp come to the surface after them! They tend to be smaller in size than the annual cicadas that appear every year. In the past, I have tied up some in the "Madam X" style and spun deer hair......I just got my cast off yesterday and will hopefully get back to tying in the next couple of weeks......anyone have any good patterns they would like to share? Mike
  16. they will work! I actually had a bass hit one of mine 2' above the water a couple of years ago......
