The traditional bucktails (as opposed to Clousers) are great flys! Don't throw that one away because it's a little long.....It will still work great for LM Bass.....trout and SM Bass you may get some short strikes, but the LM's will inhale it! Mike

In the Winter issue of "Fly Tyer", there is an article about "Hewitt's Skater Spider".....as soon as I read that article I thought of a packet of blue saddle hackles that are in the bottom of one of my materials drawers that would make a great damsel fly pattern tied in that style..... Mike

Good smallmouth flies for a beginner

Great advice from everybody already.....can't stress enough the Clouser minnows......dressed in colors to match the crayfish of your region and they make a suitable crayfish fly......also dress them to match the color of madtoms in your area......in shallow water I fish a lot of traditional bucktails (unweighted) charttreuse/white, black/white, olive/chart. are my top colors.......bunny strip leeches are also big producers......check the fly database on this website for phot and video tutorials for all of these flies...... I clicked on the picture to get a better look at it, but it blurred out on me......Depending on what your fishing for, the long tail may not be a problem....LM BAss Northern Pike, long tail won't hurt you, trout, SM Bass you may get short strikes. It may be a difficult fly to cast with all of the bulk.....? The other concern I would have (can't tell by the pic) is how much clearance do you have between the body and the hook point (gap).... Other than that, it looks fishable to me! good Luck! Mike :headbang: -
