  1. My moulted normal colored feathers are in great shape..as good as fly shop feathers. The white ones have thinner herls though. Either way, I'm glad to have them. The nearest fly shop is hours away, so finding local sources is nice.
  2. Thank you all for the information. I'll try them out. The idea of quill bodies sounds interesting. I just can't pass up free feathers. I've been getting my normal peacock there at the gift shop, and I can pick through the feathers to find the ones I want. The quality has been comparable to the herl I've bought at fly shops. They're only $1.00 each at the gift shop, so it works. Thanks again.
  3. So our local zoo has two white peacocks, and the policy is that if you find any feathers on the ground, their your's to take. They also sell peacock feathers in the gift shop, but so far they haven't picked up any white ones. They said that the one that is molting right now tends to get really dirty before molting, and they never bothered with selling his feathers, although they didn't look too bad to me. There is another one that hasn't started yet that they're hoping he doesn't get too dirty before molting. He's new this year. One of the white ones is molting right now, and I picked up two eye feathers today. They aren't in the best shape (some broken herls), but I think I can get some usable herl from them. I've gotten some normal colored feathers there, and they are great for tying, but these have very thin herl compared to the other peacocks. I don't know if that is because they are young birds or if that is a characteristic of the white birds Anyway, have any of you ever used white peacock herl, and what did you use it on? I couldn't pass up free feathers. I also picked up a wing feather from of the normal peacocks. Any ideas? Thanks, Keith
  4. Thanks for the replies. I thought that most of the feathers could be used, but I didn't have any patterns that used anything other than the secondary wing feathers. This help a lot.
  5. Well, I shot a Rio Grande gobbler last spring, and I saved the skin. I know I can use the secondary wing feathers for a lot of things, and I'm mounting the tail. What other feathers have any of you used for tying? Thanks
