Lighting and magnifying fixtures for fly tying?
5wt replied to garetjax's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
I have and use the MacKenzie light and magnifyer. Very nice equipment. The only problem I had was a few weeks ago. We had some zero weather and I kept the door closed on my Den. Well, after about 3 days of withdrawal I had to tie. Setup a couple tv trays, grabbed my vice and "attached light and mag" went to the living room, plugged in light and.......POP went the bulb. I've used the light about 3 years, so not sure if it was the cold or the age. But you will have no complaints about the functionality. -
Not trying to sound dense, but, would you suggest getting the smaller diam stuff for size 8/10 buggers?

Was looking in the craft section at the "World's Largest chain of Department Stores" you know the one. And found chenille which was packaged like yarn in 100 yard bundle. Will it work for buggers etc.... There was a small diam. and large diam. I usually tie 8's and 10's so I should probably by the larger stuff. Anyone else use this stuff? Thanks.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I tied up some clouser's in different color combos and maybe visit one of the shops while I'm there. The surf might be a little tough with the "long" pole.

WW, I'm from southeast of Pittsburgh in the Highlands. Usually hit Laurel Hill Creek, Meadow Run, Yough River, Indian Creek and you can't forget all the wild streams in my backyard........

moskito, I'm not an expert by any stretch so my advice may not be what you are looking for, but here it goes. I have experimented with a lot of different ways of tying on wings. One way that works for me is to make sure you strip enough stem and kind of make an X of the shank when starting them. With wet ones point the stems toward the eye when starting them don't worry about standing them up until you have the stems well anchored in place and then wrap behind the feathers in order to make them stand up. After that figure 8 the wraps through and around a couple times for the seperation. I always remember figure eights by thinking rear left to front right and rear right to front left ( if that makes sense). Hope this helps.

Been going to OC Maryland for the "annual migration" as I refer to it, for quite a few years fishing for flounder and croaker and such in the bay while the wife and kids are at the beach. And also get out every year or so for some Tuna. But I've never fly fished down there. Does anyone know if it's worth fly fishing in the bay? I don't care if it's for spots, little stripers or sea trout, just have the itch to take the 8 wt along this year and give it a try. I've never fly fished the salty. What types of streamers and such should I have with me? Thanks

Bluegills, Had that experience on Walnut last fall. Stayed 3 days, first day was exactly as you describe. 2nd and 3rd days on Elk improved dramatically.......
