  1. Any of those books will help. IMHO a class or two would help a ton. I have been tying now for 12 years and have not had a class for 10 years. Last week I went to one class with my dad who is just starting to tie( as moral support) and the instructor pointed out a bunch of bad habits I had picked up over the years and fixed them right there. He also helped my Dad by pointing out some stuff that I had not seen him making mistakes on and took him to the next level. Not too much longer and my Dad will be teaching me stuff instead of the other way around.
  2. I don't mind synthetic materials, but a plastic grub is where I draw the line. But that is just my own point of view. I rairly use plastics in conventional fishing so why would I use it in flyfishing?
  3. What size thread are you using? Sounds like your thread is too thin. Personally I won't stack hair with anything except flatwaxed only because I can't break the stuff.
  4. You sit in class and instead of figureing out the genetics question at hand, you are trying to figure out if you can breed 2 chicken to get the grizzly hackle you are looking for. Don't worry your not alone in that thought, we discussed the same thing last week in genetics and I had the same thought. edit: You know it is bad when you see people wearing coats with fur lined collars and you think.... hmm that would make some good fly tying material, wonder if I could clip a little off without being noticed.
  5. After this weeks exams I will get off my tail and post some stuff. I have a few ideas.
  6. Funny thing about the Ceramic Bobbin. I still use the bobbin that my kit came with 12+ years ago, it is not ceramic and I don't get thread breakages. I have had the suggestion a few times in the past month and I just don't see the need. I think tension is a big problem with the spinning factor. When I overtension my bobbin I always have spinning, try opening up your bobbin just a little by stretching it before you put your spool on.
  7. What kind of Vice to you use to tye that, vicegrips
  8. Maybe the reason I have never had a problem with Mustads is because I never tie anything smaller then 14. The larger hooks should not break as easily I would think.
  9. Mustad or Tiemco depending on the hook. Tried some of the expensive hooks, did not see any differnence except a larger hole in my wallet.
  10. I know it is a coldwater fly but man can I see a big bluegill coming up from the bottom and creaming that fly. I think I will have to tie a few of those.

    Photo editors

for basic resizeing I use Infanview, it is freeware and great. For basic editing I use Gimp or Inkscape.
  12. What do you use? I have seen a few patterns lately that have dyed epoxy. I was wondering what you add to get the colors? TIA
  13. I think I have... once, when I had no money at all on me. I have walked out of Orvise more then once without buying anything.
  14. I use my multitool to cut the beadchain. You know your a Jeeper when you keep at least 1 multitool next to your bed( where my fly tying stuff is) and use it at least 3 times a week.
  15. Yep I say pack tighter. You will be amazed as to how much deer hair will fit onto a hook.
  16. My biggest trout is my only trout. I caught an 18in Rainbow on a creek that was narrow enough for me to jump across when I was like 12. To be honest it was cool but I did not catch the trout bug. Dad keeps telling me I will once I get to do it again for real.
  17. No trout for a few hours drive. The fishing is good from what everyone tells me about down there. Some HUGE Panfish. You also have the Chesapeake Bay to fish most of the year if you want. I don't live down there, I am about 1.5 hours drive up I-64 in Richmond.
  18. Other then the normal screeching stop to get some dead animals tail, nothing really.
  19. My favorite material... hooks and thread :lol2: Really I love tying in foam and bucktail. I hate tying with hackle. I used to tye all the time with it but I have gotten tired of it.
