I like the wiss nips. They are everything Bryon described. I find they very easy to sharpen as well. A couple of swipes with a hook hone and they are razor sharp again. haha, I love the thing, but I only have one, as the threading is so easy. Its nothing to change the spoil. I have a bobbin graveyard thanks to the Mp. haha But for sure, you only will need 1.

You got plenty of fly shops in that area, Stop by one and they will tell you what to use on your local waters. Also check out the mid atlantic fly fishing guide, it is free monthly mag, It will tell the hatches and what patterns are working well.

Since you are just starting out, keep it simple. For nymph fishing just carry pheasant tails,and hares ears size 12-18. Streamers, carry wooly buggers, black, brown, and olive. size 6-12. For dry flies, just carry giffith gnats size 12-24 and parachute adams. You will be able to catch a lot trout with those patterns. But be sure to work on your presentation, it is equally as important to the fly you are presenting. Good luck.

I cant choose as i love all my wets equally. In a cast i usually have a winged on top, a flymph in the middle and spider on the bottom. I tie them in sizes from 8-28, They all have thier time and place on the stream

I am hopelessly addicted to my MP bobbin. I used to use tiemco ceramic and gave ritt a go, but they dont measure up to the MP. imho

Just use ritt dye or other clothing dyes. Although you if you use koolaid, you could drink what is left over! lol For rich colors you need white. So either buy white materials or you will need to bleach. You can use hair bleach for that. To achieve rich colors, use a touch of salt and some vinegar. Also the longer you leave the materials in the dye bath the dark they will be. Any other info needed on dying, simply do a search here on the site, as there has been much discussions on this in the past. happy dying!

Keep your rod on a level plain, and keep your casting stroke smooth but deliberate. Start slow and speed up, and stop. Lots of guide casting videos on youtube.

cdl for tailing is absolutley great. It has a nice modeling to it, and the stiffness is equal to fibbets and I agree, that it is easier to work with. If your going to pick some up, you want the saddle hackle, you can buy an entire saddle for pretty cheap. The tailing packs whiting offers are a good bargain as well.

This is a tough question, lol. but id say i use more patridge (hungarian) than anything else, though I do love all the other game skins i have and i have quite a few, prolly why its such a hard question lol

Thank you I thought of the fly from always tying in tailing material then quickly lashing it down to tie it in. I usually always tie wire ribs in on the way down so this is how I thought of doing the thread rib. I always tied in the tails in such a manner and always thought, well that body looks good. So I twisted a couple of banes up and took them out with me. My first experience with the fly was on my local limestone stream. The trout were very responsive to it and I had a great day the water so much so that I decided on the flies(technique) name. But i dont consider the trout bane as a single fly but more as a tying technique. I have many different versions of banes that i use in my nymph fishing. A great bane is this one and H.T.P. Bane, both are the top producers amongst the banes for me. All the best Johnny

I like to use the daiichi hooks, just cause that is what I like. I have tied this pattern on many different hooks though. Including scud or emerger hooks. But any nymph or dry fly hook will work

Materials Hook- Daiichi 1550 16-24 Thread- Uni 8/0 Light cahlill Tail- Pheasant tail fibers Abdomen- Thread with pheasant tail fibers tied in on top Rib- Tying thread Wing case- Pheasant tail Fibers Thorax- Light yellow u.v. Ice dub Legs(optional)- Pheasant tail fibers Start the thread near the eye. Run it back a quarter, and back up. Keep repeating and going down the shank a little further each time. This will form a taper. Stop the thread before the barb Take -6-8 pheasat tail fibers, use less for smaller flies. Measure them to be half the distance of the hook shank, and tie them in on top with two wraps one right on top of the other Now lift up the pheasant tail and take two touching turns forward on the shank. Then lay the pheasant tail down and take two wraps over it. Continue this until you reach the 3/4 point on the shank Now dub the thorax, Take a wrap over the pheasant tail fibers forcing them back. Be sure to keep them on top. Now bring the pheasant tail over the top. Secure it down with two tight turns . Then one tight turn in front of the fibers Split the remaining fibers to form legs. Sweep them back with your finger and thumb and wrap the thread back over them. Whip finish. Then take the legs and pull them down to the point of the hook and snip. you can cut them shorter, or if you dont want legs, simple break them off. The top should look something like this. And the bottom should look something like this. Give the top a coating of u.v. light and your bane is ready fish.
