Can a heavy mono filament be used as a substitute for backing to attaching the fly line to the reel?

I just began tying and often use live wax worms for bluegills. I seen a pattern in the data base called a Waxie that looks great. It was made by sage8wt. Does anyone have a source for the latex body? I have not been able to find anything on the Internet and I was searching for nymph skin. Latex gloves could possibly work, but how would you cut it and get a uniform straight line?
