I notice that several members have been asking about traditional fly proportions...I found this on a British tying site and thought it might be useful for some beginers. Mike................ FLY PROPORTIONS In imitative flytying confusion seems to reign in proportioning flies and nymphs. The following diagrams attempt to simplify this by taking measurements from both the natural insects and literally hundreds of photographs of them. This is not to say that the proportions are 100% accurate for all upwing species - they will however give a very good basis from which to work. In a standard collar hackled fly, the general consensus of opinion is that the hackle should measure 1.5 - 2 x the gape of the hook and the width of wing 0.5 - 1 x the hook gape. UPWINGED FLY PROPORTIONS %SIZES RELATE TO HOOK SHANK. EG.50% = 1/2 HOOK SHANK. On straight shanked hooks, the shank length is usually measured from behind the eye, to the point immediately above the barb position. Fig. 1 Tying Proportion for ‘adult’ upwinged flies Proportions will cover most of the Upwinged (Mayflies) likely to be found on British and European waters. With Spinners and Spent flies tails can be somewhat longer. Check the natural for number of tails, two or three. Wing width is normally proportioned by the gape of the hook. From 50%-100%. Hackle length 150%-200% of hook gape. Spread should not normally exceed thorax area. Heads when formed, particularly on nymphs. should be approximately the size of the hook eye Fig 2 Agile Darter nymph proportions as for dry fly, excluding tails which are 50% (usually) With the exception of one European nymph (this fly is not found on British waters) all Upwinged flies (Mayflies) in the nymphal stage have three tails. The proportions shown in fig.2 cover the Agile Darters which is the largest group and includes all the Baetis nymphs. The Stone Clingers, eg. Heptagenia and Bottom Burrowers, E. Danica and E. Vulgata are totally different - but still have three tails. The Moss Creepers, eg. E.Ignita (BWO) are similar but somewhat stouter

Hi Swamp....I have found the same ribbon and it is like a stiffer organzer type material. I have used heat to shape it but like the idea of the heart cutter..................isnt is funny that fly tryers from all over the world find the same things. Maybe we all have the same warped minds set on finding new materials where ever we are.......................... :headbang: :headbang: :hyst: :hyst: Mike...................
