  4. Ok who can help me, when I joined the forum I registered on the ff forum and then when I registered with ftf I put in my British Mike ID. How can I change the FFF login name to be the same as this one. The reason I ask is that people are getting confused with the two ids that I have ............does that make any sense to anyone?................ :headbang: I tried to change it but it tells me that the email address is allready used by another member....and thats ME ........... Mike :hyst:
  5. well Zip where do I start....................I suppose the funniest time I decided to collect some materials was when I was attending a wedding in a dress suit and the reception was in the grounds of a large country manor house......they had large avaries with exotic birds and yes you guessed it I spotted some center tail molts from a huge macaw, I handed my glass of champagne to a person nearby had to lay down in the dirt and slide my hand under the cage and stretch in.............I am not going to tell you the comments that I got from my then wife........ but im sure you can make that up. Anyways I left that wedding reception a happy man, 3 very long center tails from a macaw. I could go on with more tales but you guys are going to think im crazy........ :headbang: Ok I have started the tales lets see them all guys........... Mike

  16. I only reuse salmon irons when a pattern goes wrong or I am not happy with the result. Always worried about reusing hooks that have been used and have been wet........... Thats seems a high price for Tiemco hooks, I have brought some from Ebay at a cheaper rate and I always stock up when I go back to England, they are cheaper there........ :yahoo: Mike
  17. Since I have been using saddle hackles I now use my hands as well for control and also some of those saddles have feathers 10 inches long.............wouldnt want to try pliers on those.... Like a lot of things in tying ...practice makes perfect.............. The Brit has spoken............. Mike
  18. Interesting reading guys, There is no such law in the UK and a long time ago someone gave me a pair of Owl wings from a road kill. I researched and there is a classic victorian pattern of a moth that uses the feather from an owl for the winging and it is a rolled wing rather like a classic sedge /caddis pattern. Now the question is, as I am living in the USA now do I have to get rid of these feathers quick? :dunno: It wouldnt be a problem as I certainly dont want to get a fine or into any trouble with the boys in blue.. Mike..........................the brit has spoken
  19. She is in my thoughts Damian hope all goes well. Hang in there. Mike
  20. I would wash it in a little washing detergent and warm water, rinse well, then tease it out on a flat surface with a wide tooth comb. Natural lambs wool dyes well and is great for dubbing. I mix it with other dubbings like SLF and Antron. Happy washing........lol Mike
  21. Hi Red, I did have a 12 inch kick board around the floor but that was also to help keep out the wind. A very important point is you must ensure is that the pheasants have a hut or shed to go into when it is very cold and rains, snows etc. and at night. In the shed there should be a roosting pole for them to roost / sit on as they feel secure when they are off the ground. I had my pole about 4 feet off the ground. It is interesting to note that these birds are very nervous and scare easily. When they molt they look like something from a roadrunner cartoon............. :hyst: so funny. Hope that this helps and if you want anymore info let me know either on here or email. Good luck Mike.....
  22. I raised golden and amherst pheasants in the UK and you guys are right, they are great to look at but one hell of a lot of work to keep secure and cleaning up etc. I lost two of my prime birds to foxes burrowing under the chicken wire, so if your serious about this make sure that you run the chicken wire along the floor of the enclosure as well as the top and sides. I didnt kill any birds for feathers but waited each year for the molt and collected all the salmon tying pheasant that I needed. Something about the golden crests from home grown pheasants is special, maybe the diet but mine had a wonderfull red tip to each one. Well good luck if your going ahead with the project. Keep us posted and lets see some pics of the birds as they grow. Mike
  23. Hi Zip, I was glad to be able to help with some suggestions. They look great flies especially for a first attempt. Maybe on your next try make the extended bodies a little smaller and slimmer. Good work Zip Mike
