Going by the pics on your site ,you really don't have a clue on what a mess is .

Lead dumbbells get the snot knocked out of them. Any color comes off and the lead distorts as they bounce through rocks. Just keep fishing them until you lose them or you only have a hook left.

Tie up a few flies like you already have in rust/burnt orange/orange combinations especially that last one that's pictured. If you have any larger scud hooks (size 8) or other curved hooks look up Egan's Headstand and Joe Montana's Hybrid carp fly. Sized 8 - 12 buggy nymphs with rubber legs work too. Tie up some bone fish style flies in crayfish colors and break out some San Juan Worms, you'll have what you need. It'll just be getting your fly into their window of view without spooking them after that. Target any that are on the outside edge of the pod or are separated from the rest and head down stirring up the bottom , since they'll be actively feeding and a little less spooking.

ok , thanks guys. Need to do a thread order so a good time to give Flat waxed nylon a try. The reason I asked is I need to order about 8 spools in various colors to replace what I am out of and need to save a little money wherever I can. The flat waxed is a little cheaper for the same amount of Flymaster 140 . Money is a bit tight so every bit helps especially when thread isn't the only thing I am about out of.

I know they list them as two different deniers but how does Danville Flymaster plus (140 denier) compare to their flat waxed nylon (210 denier) when tying. Is the flat waxed nylon that much bulkier? I've used Danville's 210 denier thread but never their flat waxed nylon. I like using the Flymaster 140 for carp and bass flies with dumbbell or beadchain eyes and was wondering if the flat waxed nylon would work without the thread being too much bulkier ?

That's a beautiful rod , only thing that would make it even nicer is if it was a 7 wt. then add a box of flies , WF7F line/ reel and a stream full of smallies.

Need help figuring out these flies

Bead chain eyes , you can just see the line where the metal comes together in them to form the bead in the second pic. -
Always need more , sizes and styles !

Don't forget the Foxy Clouser http://globalflyfisher.com/video/foxy-clouser

I tie all of mine in rootbeer/orange , rust or straight bright orange (especially in small sizes). I have yet to find an orange or rust colored crawfish in the wild , around here they seem to be dark chocolate brown with a little blue and muddy tan to olive in the smallest sizes. I am planning to try a few other color combinations this year but the orange/rust tones always attract fish.

How big are most of your WW Bass Flies?
Brian Myers replied to Robert M's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Smallies in rivers and streams, always wading. Sizes 4-8 occasionally down to size 12 . Streamers and crawfish patterns , though mostly crawfish this past year. Seemed like I didn't anything but crawfish last year. -
A couple of crawfish Mustad 3366 size 1

Awesome thanks ! -
Another place to get colored wire is http://www.fusionbeads.com. Look under ARTISTIC WIRE , it's permanently colored copper wire sold on 15 yd or 30 yd. spools ( depends on gauge) in different gauges.

I always liked tying my gold ribbed hare's ear nymphs using cottontail fur from the back of the pelt. Found it easier to dub and has plenty of guard hairs.
-
As rolsen said try lightly waxing your thread , if that doesn't work for you then go the dubbing loop route. When I actually lived where there were trout and close by (high schools days ), I used a lot of thrift store fur collars to tie including mink and fitch fur. It made good dubbing for mayfly nymphs etc. and all I cared about was if the color was close to what I was tying. I caught plenty of fish with those flies and still use fur from collars , pieces of coats and the occasional section of an old pelt I got cheap because it was starting to fall apart. I use an old coffee grinder for blending into dubbing , mixing types and colors to see what I get including mixing it with store bought dubbing . Now a days I fish for smallmouth and carp so I will even cut strips of the garment fur to make make larger strip nymphs, crazy carpers and such. Use your imagination , anything goes so long as the fish fall for it. I have enough mink dubbing left to last the rest of my life , lol. Now if the rivers and creeks would clear up so I can actually go fishing!

Prefer upstream but it all depends on where I park and where I'm able to walk in .

Cortland slip on loop failure.
Brian Myers replied to natedubay's topic in Fly Fishing Gear & Techniques
I have used them a long time , up until last year when one came off while I had decent smallie on. I had a spot of CA on the end of it and the heat shrink tubing over that . The thing pulled right off , luckily the the fish was close at hand and I was able to chase after and grab my leader. I'm done with them after that. Now I just nail knot a piece of heavy tippet with perfection loop on the other end to my line and put dab of pliobond or CA over the nail knot. -
What to tie for Large Mouth and Small Mouth Bass? Materials?
Brian Myers replied to jamesbrock3's topic in Beginner's Corner
For river smallies , any crayfish pattern in sizes 6-10. Carp Candy is a decent pattern but I tend to tie it in more muted orange shades instead bright orange. Lately I've been using a simplified version , size 8-10 streamer hook or GCO 2302 curved hook , 7/64th or 1/8th black or gold dumbbell eye tied close to the eye, orange marabou or rabbit fur ( from a hareline's crayfish orange zonker strip) tail, one piece of krystal flash (color your choice or even forget it) on either side of the tail and rootbeer cactus chenille (currently using the med. size but have ordered the large to try) tied from the tail right up to the back of the dumbbell eye. Easy and effective small crayfish pattern that can be fished dead drift or bounced along the bottom. 1/8" eye is better for bouncing along the bottom. Another easy pattern to tie is a Jamie's Krazy Carper in whatever color you choose. http://www.flydogs.net/KrazyCarperRecipe.html- 14 replies

What brand of tying thread do you use?
Brian Myers replied to Gustav F.'s topic in Featured Topic Archive
Danville first (started with Danville as a teen and it's cheap) , UNI 8/0 second (I like uni but Danville is cheaper) and have a few rolls of UTC ( would like to like this thread but I have a tendency to nick my thread on the hook point enough that I break it too easily and it frays , love how it lays flat though.) -
Well not sipping but Hoovering them from the surface film.
-
They'll sip midges and such if they were hatching and in large enough numbers to get their attention.
-
Oops make that 7/64" dumbell eye
-
May not be a nymph but Size 10 streamer hook , 7/32 black brass dumbbell eye tied at the hook eye, med. rootbeer cactus chenille, orange marabou or rabbit fur(from a zonker strip) tail with a single piece of krystal fash on either side of it. Simple to tie and works killer (during crayfish season) on smallies (any size) , sunfish and river chubs, should be great for carp too. Only thing is smallies over 10-12" seem to take it very lightly and it's easy to miss the take. Need to tie up a bunch more as my last one remained in the river.
