Ya as switch said its good to be a ski bum, i too work at a ski resort which leaves you with you summers wide open to fish and in some of the most beautiful parts of the country to boot. my fishing buddy is also a cat operator actually.. he makes it sound like a pretty sweet gig.. but ya i too am at a point in my life where i can fish almost any day that i please (mostly from 3 to 6 days a week). I feel very lucky to be able to feed the addiction!

Give me some hopper pattern suggestions
Istripbuggers replied to mridenour's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
I like the az wanderings hopper, theres a you tube vid for it.. its pretty simple and has done me good on the local brookies -
Nice cutt! It looks alot different then the lct's then i catch out here in ca, is that a greenback?
-
Thats an awesome pattern cheech im gunna tie some up and see if i can get some trout to take a nab at em
-
And glow bug yarn or rams wool makes a pretty nice streamer head but lazer dub has alot more flash making it better for bass and steelhead.. heres a lazer dub streamer i tied for example and heres a rams wool head streamer
-
Ice dub would be better for a direct dubbing method as is has shorter fibers, ive always used lazer dub by tying it in as clumps like rams wool or deer hair similarly, it has 3/4" fibers so it makes a nice long tapered body when tied in as a head, but it goes fast so if you plan on using it alot get a few packs of the same color, it also works well in dubbing loops.

Flytire, what kind of hooks are those panfish flys on? -
My friends took this picture of what i belive is a salmonfly.. whats wierd is where they found it, it was on the north fork of the north fork of the american river out of emigrant gap ca. I havent even heard of a salmonfly hatch in this area, just wanted some conformation.. thanks, Miles

Bait fish patterns using senyos laser dub tied on a sz. 6 7XL 3XH mustad lemrick hook. the first one is tied in sculpin colors the second one is rainbow colors.. -
Somewhere between realistic and impressionistic, hopper patterns will always hold a special place in my hart.. well done
-
All this talk about fish i guess i should post a fly.. heres a sculpin pattern i tied for said truckee.. I didn't get around to snipping the front hook off yet
-
Haha dry fly action on the truckee.. no one believes it happens.. everyone nymphs and swings.. here's another one out of the truckee i caught yesterday on a sz. 16 para Adams the brown was my buddy btw, i just took the shot.
-
I actually use that foam pattern as a skawala stone too. Just a few weeks ago i was using it with some weight in front to sink it down as an attractor pattern on the truckee river.. here's a picture of a brown caught on one just a few weeks ago.. in the second picture you can see the foam monstrosity.

FTF Fly Challenge: Wooly Buggers
Istripbuggers replied to smalliehunter's topic in Featured Topic Archive
Can we restart this challenge? id be interested to see everyones buggers nodays.. ill throw one out there. -
I dont know how much id even trust some of those hatch charts they can be way too general with times e.g. The hatch chart for my river ( the truckee river) it says bwos hatch starts may 31st however they are already starting to appear en masse due to the low snow year. and it didnt mention a important early season hatch, the winter stone (or skawala) . But that being said they can still be importent at times. postnote: i hate getting my fishing info from the internet, so i might be biased. but that bieng said you guys on this fourm give out the most honest info ive seen thus far, and i thank you for it!

Who here likes the "Brassie"
Istripbuggers replied to i_love_rush_and_ledzepp's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
No glue just slide it on start your thread and build up your thread behind the bead to keep it place, but you dont really need a bead on that fly just a matter of preference for its sink speed. good luck and have fun! -
Truckee river browns caught on sz. 8 black stones
