  1. I have just driven 1300 miles from Redding to San Diego and back. I was hoping to spot a road kill blackbird on the way. In fact I hardly saw a live one. If you see one maybe you could pm me and send the wings to me so I could hand it over to Game and Fish!
  2. I know! I don't know what I was thinking when I let that one pass........ Great flies silver creek and thanks for the donating. Back to the original question. Yes the fly will catch fish but indeed the proportions could be better. The original Adams uses a single, hard to get, Cree hackle. I've been tying for years, but I'm not that good, trying to improve though. Baz
  3. I agree with part of your statement, but I have to disagree with this conjecture. The underside of a fly is lit not by light reflected from the bottom structure, but by the diffraction of light through the water. Even in deep water, where the bottom cannot possibly reflect all the way back to the surface, the underside of a fly is still lit up by light reflecting all over within the water column. I guess I should have said reflection from small particles in the water also illuminate the under surface. I am not sure that diffraction is the correct term for what occurs since I do not think diffraction cannot reverse the direction of light while reflection can. Divers have a term for this reflected light, it is called "back scatter"In bright light if you look from the mid water up, all you see is bright white light and see very little of anything on the surface. Maybe that's why dry fly fishing is usually better early and late in the day when the sun is low But going back to the thread, good Cree hackle reigns supreme!
  4. I am not actually looking to purchase a LAW vice, but the access to the hook on the standard Renzetti Master is somewhat hampered by the large blunt jaws. Now I find I can buy a set of midge jaws for it, that might well solve the problem As a observation the CAE vice is very close to the LAW and would be a excellent lower cost alternative if it wasn't for its reputation of poor quality. My other choice of the J Vice is hampered by the lack of a metal base.
  5. Tried a google search but came up blank.
  6. I realize that Blackbird wings are not legal here in the USA but I love to tie the Greenwells Glory with the hen wings. My old supply has long since run out. I have been using duck quills, but I don't like them so much as the blackbird Anyone suggest something else? Other than starling. I've been looking for a roadkill blackbird here in California for the last couple of years, but no luck. My other half did find a heron not long ago, but she rightly left it alone, boy there great for Speys. If you happen to know of a set of wings the " a nod is as good as a wink to a blind man". Nod, nod, wink, wink!!
  7. Thanks for the info, I'll check my serial number and see if it's compatible with the Renzetti Midge jaws
  8. I would love to try a LAW, but I just can't afford it! I'm still fishing on the Lower Sac, but these days I'm basically retired but I do fish with old clients. I missed the "Egg hatch " last winter since I was in Mexico. Loved it down there, butt I'm looking forward to the winter in Redding.
  9. The Renzetti Master is a good vice. The problem being the jaws are very large. It's great for salt water flies, but small tying nymphs the jaws seem to get in the way. And they do not offer a midge set for it!
  10. I'm considering a new vice. I have a Rezetti Master. I know it's good, but as a guide I would like to try a upgrade for tying nymphs. The Law has a very high reputation but I can't afford one even if I could find one. I have been considering the J vice with the Damascus jaws. The other option is the CAE engineering version of the LAW which looks very well made and very similar to the LAW. I also know of the Snowbee/ LAW, which is readily available , but not the same as the original LAW. So what makes the LaW so good? Or is one of my other options just as good for my needs?
  11. Hi, does anyone have a ceramic fur rake they want to part with ? I'll pay a good price
  12. Why would you want duplicate a Not Viise? The original is quality and readily available. The Law is not available and the CAE is not a exact copy.
  13. Crackaig, thanks I got your pm. I'm on my phone at the moment and I can't seem to reply to pm's. I sent a message to Wes but no reply as yet. That is quite a setup he has. More stuff than most fly shops !
  14. Joe , thanks I already had read that thread. To be honest is smells a bit like troll to me. Of course I would like a LAW but they are not available and the design has not been passed to others to manufacture which is a great pity Bazzer
  15. Simon, that's impressive, Thanks Bazzer
  16. I know that the CAE engineering vise is A close copy of the LAW vise , bit my question is " is it a quality product and how much is it". Of course I would like to try a LAW vise, but since they are no longer available and the price of used ones is nothing short of stupid I see nothing wrong with anyone coming up with a alternative. There are other quality vises on the market, but I don't want to pay a couple of thousand for one. I like the looks of the Jvise, but I also like the looks of the CAE product. I would love to hear from someone who has one or has used one with maybe a photo or two Thanks Bazzer
  17. Thanks, it seems that he was 80 in 2009 and as quoted he wrote lots of books and owned Sunridge tackle. I've been out of the UK for a number of years and out the loop so to speak.
  18. I started tying way back in the early sixties with a class run by Geoffrey Bucknell. He showed up on his motorcycle and my first tie was a spider pattern. Does anyone know if he is still around? I would like to say thanks for getting me started all those years ago Bazzer
  19. All of the fly's will catch fish. But they are too heavily dressed. Just like most fly's you might buy from your local fly shop, they are designed to catch fishermen rather than fish. So try to be a little more sparce with the materials and tie more and more and more.....
  20. I'm sure it's very much a one off from a engineer. As for wood, why? Your vice and all your tools are not made of,wood. I agree it's not for everyone, but a lot of work sure has gone into it.
  21. I would like hear comments from anyone who owns or has used a J vise. I am a semi pro tier, actually a guide who ties just for client use,. My current vise is a Renzetti Persentation and I have broken a couple of sets of jaws and I think I would like to upgrade.
