  1. I think his thought was just getting the loop to sway away from the line so it didn't touch on the fowards cast. He's not a pro, but he casts a lot better than I do. I never tried what he said because like you guys said, it didn't correct the real problem. I'm going to take a few notes from this post and head out to the casting pond. Some of the things in here are a bit overwhelming for a rookie guy like me, so a few adjustments at a time and some practice on those will be my first step. Hopefully I can fix it. Thanks again for all of the info and help. I'm heading out to the casting pond tomorrow. I'll report back...
  2. Agreed, great video as well. Thanks to both of you guys! Can't wait to get out and give it a shot!
  3. Looks about spot on to things I'm doing. I think I can get out tomorrow to give it a try. Thank you! I didn't want to try the "cocking my hand out thing" because I didn't think it corrected the problem, as much as just adjusted things to have the problem not cause as many issues. This looks to fix the true issue. Thanks again! Eric
  4. Well, I know it's easier with video, but I don't have that. Was wondering if maybe someone could help me correct a casting problem. On my forwards cast, my fly sometimes dips low causing a circle instead of the open tight loop I'm looking for. With this, my tippet line often touches the main line and the fly sometimes catches the knot. Hope that made sense. My buddy said to cock my hand out a bit on the forward cast and the lines wouldn't be touching, but when he casts, there's no circle, it's just an open loop that unrolls. So I'm thinking it's my timing on my back cast. Again, I'm really new to fly fishing and if none of this makes sense, lol, sorry. I'm just wondering if either of these could be common issues for beginners and someone might have a tip for me to practice next time I'm out at the casting pond. thanks maybe this amazing MS paint picture will help
  5. Realized it's the wrong place for this. PM'd a mod to delete it. Sorry, can't edit title.
  6. Thanks for the heads up. Glad I have something that is ok to use. I had a shop in town that would have had parts for all of this stuff. HSC Electronics. Best parts store I've ever been in. I could buy $50 in parts or $0.25 in parts and always get what I needed. Unfortunately, it closed this summer. I got a little UV flashlight off of ebay for $7 shipped. It hardened the goo pretty quickly. It was more my application of it that was the problem I think.
  7. Ok, thanks for the advise. I think what confused me was the item I purchased being called "UV Cured Epoxy" on ebay. Most likely to get more hits from a search because the actual item/tube does not have the word epoxy on it. It's called "Fleck Clear Cure Goo" and has a picture of a tied fly on it. Is this the equivalent of resin? or a cheap substitute that I shouldn't be wasting my time with? New to this and went the cheap route and yeah, you usually get what you pay for. As for the motor, I just couldn't think of something that spun slow enough. I've taken household items apart for their motors before, but mostly fans, etc.. Again, thanks for the help.
  8. so you don't dry your fly with a UV light? Or you just don't let it totally harden? Or you just put it on the drying wheel for the last coat and use the light for the rest? What do you use for a stirrer? thanks for the help! For making a home made drying wheel, because I'm not spending $100 on this, what do you use that rotates that slow? My local parts store that would have had everything I need closed this past summer.
  9. Any tips on working/smoothing/spreading epoxy? Getting it even on both sides of the fly was pretty difficult. Take it that it was my first try and I'm using a tooth pick to smooth it out, but it didn't quite turn out like I'd like it. Tips on methods, tools, etc.. would be much appreciated. Do you put it on something, and spread it with a needle? or put it right on the fly from the tube? thanks!
  10. Thanks for all of the info and pics! Got the cheap ebay uv light and some epoxy. Think it totaled at about $20 shipped. Waiting on the epoxy. A lot of flies to choose from. Sounds like we're fishing in a similar type of water. Crazy Charlie looks easy enough. Guess I better get started. THANKS AGAIN!! -Eric
  11. Cool! Thanks for the advice! I'll see if I have the stuff to make a white wooley bugger and a small clouser. I've been using rooster neck for hackle for wooley buggers, but I only have red and black. As for the UV epoxy, I'm going to have to order some. The pro shop had it at $30 per bottle by Loon, but they didn't have the UV light, so I'll just search online for a kit. thanks again! Time to get tying
  12. Something like these would be perfect. I wouldn't even really know where to start with it though. Never tried anything epoxy.
  13. Sorry for not being clear. I'm on the west coast. I'm thinking San Francisco Bay and San Pablo bay. Lots of different perch around the piers and rock walls. Rubber lips, etc... When fishing live bait it's mostly grass shrimp. Sometimes cut chunks of raw shrimp. Off of the beach it would be gulp camo sandworms and motor oil grubs. Live off of the beach would be sand crabs. These were all on live grass shrimp in San Pablo Bay last year.
  14. new to fly fishing and new to fly tying, but want to fly fish for perch in the bay. I think my salt water 9wt might be a bit overkill for perch, but my 3 and 5wt are fresh water cheapo setups (not sure if they can used for both, like I said, I'm new to this) So what flies would be good for perch fishing. I usually fish live grass shrimp and I saw some great looking grass shimp made by people on this board, but I don't think I'm good enough at tying to take those on quite yet. Any suggestions or flies that i should give a try for this? Or clarification on the fresh/salt thing for my smaller cheaper rods would be appreciated. The 3wt is a cheapo LL Bean and the 5wt is a cheapo reddington pursuit. My 9wt is also a reddington pursuit, but the "salt water" model, whatever that means. (yeah, I'm new.) thanks in advance, Eric
