Have you tried laser dub? I've used it on 18's without issue, not sure about 20's but it would be worth a shot.

No, that was an actual critique. As fishing flies, yes you are right there isn't anything wrong with them and they will absolutely catch fish. However if you're looking to tie for display (which I know Eide has been looking to get into, hence the critique) then there are a lot of small things you have to pay attention to. Here is another picture of one I took from Hatches mag. notice the floss? They did leave out a tip on this one and do hackle is tied in sort of a MOM style but without a book in front of me I couldn't say what was originally called for. Again it's a very nice pair for fishing but if you want to take on these flies for display purposes you do need to notice these things.

Nice flies! I'd suggest going a little shorter on the tag, really work to smooth that floss tag out as well. Try to go a little heavier on the hackle (length is good) and play with the wings a bit more, it looks like thy may have started collapsing a bit on the one fly.

Just so you know, the practice of flossing is really looked down upon in Ontario, it's a cheap way of catching half dead fish and borders illegal. If you want to fish salmon either cast streamers in estuaries and off of piers with the smaller streams or swing larger rivers like the Saugeen to actually get a hit. Flies like comets, egg sucking leeches, small intruders and spey patterns work well in the bigger water.

Sorry about that, skipped my mind! But I suppose it's as good an excuse as any to come up here.

Can't help with that area, I'm sure someone can though!

Just got back from the park last night, it's an amazing place! Take some time to fish the rivers in the lamar valley if you can for sure.

The body and hackle on this guy are great! A little more wing as suggested would be nice, I'd also experiment with another throat other than peacock.

Difference between brookies and other trout?
Christopher K replied to pnptrapp's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Brookies are a char But what has been suggested will work well, royal wulffs are my favourite, on the faster streams in wyoming you shouldn't need to really "match the hatch" so much as make something with some colour and lots of hackle/hair. -
Remember that whiting grades their saddles not by the actual qualities of the feather but by feather count instead.

the sharpie colour faded a little after a few hours of fishing and eight or ten fish. I tried one where I colored one side of the biot and a second where I colored both sides. the one with both sides colored retained more of its color. I was using the purple soft hackle as a dropper off my popper and caught 21 blue gills on them from 6:30 this morning to 11:00. I will add the sharpie colored biots to my repertoire of techniques! I colour quill bodies all the time, put on a coat of uv cement and it will last a good bit of use!

From what I can see it looks more like a synthetic hair than feathers, I'm sure you could find a use for them with big streamers.

I'll get some cash in an envelope any mail it out tonight, let's see, do I have anything 15x20?
-
Yup, and a 4" is considered small by some bass anglers as well, anything up to a foot long will serve you well. I'd also look for a fly that pushes water, they're more noticeable to fish.

Ebay Score...I hope I did not screw myself!
Christopher K replied to add147's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Looks like a decent haul, especially for the price! As for the duck quills, they were most likely used for wing cases as others have stated but I know that some guys who tie classic winged wet flies like to coat their quills with flex cement or similar to make quantities of wings. -
Oh, and let me know what shipping is when you get a chance to send it back!
-
Haha, ya it was a little small, don't worry about keeping the hackles on everyone else's perfect, I doubt you could fit one 12 in there easily!
-
That's how it works. They have no way of knowing if you killed a bird or found it so to make it simple they outlaw possession of certain feathers, it's annoying but those are the rules!
-
Will get mine in the mail tomorrow, can you PM me an addy please?
-
Looks good, but needs about 5x that amount of dubbing! Thanks for the SBS.

This is what I mean by that Mike. Thanks for the ideas guys, I'll try them out!

Orange Heron (Glasso), 1 Pair of Teal, 3 flies
Christopher K replied to FlyFishin'Jam's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Flawless as always! -
I've been playing around with Geezus lizards and texas ringworms lately and am really liking this technique, I was just wondering if there are any other popular patterns that use them? Or has anyone on here designed patterns themselves that use the method?

Making The Most of Summer Vacation.. Tying Shad Flies.
Christopher K replied to flyoloco.com's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
I own a couple cranks in that colour combo and they are awesome, I have no doubt that fly will slay some bass! -
That's what I was thinking too. But it could be anything, congo hair, EP fibres.
