About the Perfect Popper heads I'm using... Can't post photos since Imgur (my bucket site for photos) is down for some reason but here's some info.. Perfect Poppers come as already slotted and shaped heads - and yes, the SpeedBug does have a cupped face although the photos I chose doesn't show it... They make both hard bodied and soft heads -the ones I'm using for the SpeedBug are listed as being for a #4 hook (for freshwater purposes I'm guessing). So the #1 hook I'm using is way above what the maker suggests - but it's exactly right for my purposes.. When Imgur is back up I've got a photo that will show the relationship between head and hook a lot more clearly...
Hope this helps - although I no longer tie commercially, we still use a lot of these bugs in the backcountry of the Everglades where they're very successful...
Thanks, Capt. Bob.

Here's one or two from the Everglades...
the SpeedBug... very quick to tie, the head is a Perfect Popper soft foam item with a much larger hook than they recommend, a Mustad #34007 in size #1. I've filled orders for hundreds of these to shops. We only fish them at dawn or dusk (or on days when there's little or no wind). Baby tarpon, snook, speckled trout - eat them like candy...
SpeedBug color variations - note the complete absence of any eyes or decoration at all... I have my anglers working them like crippled small bait with very, very short sharp strips. To really make these work properly you must have the tip of the rod in the water when stripping and the rod pointed directly at the bug...
The Razor-cut Mullet, Mustad #34007 3/0, note the wire weedguard... Done up in all white, the head is shaped, then the head is colored, the eyes glued in place, then after the wire weedguard is bent into position - the spun and razored head is coated with Seal Flex for durability...
These big sliders work at surface or just under the surface... done up on Tiemco 600sp 3/0 hooks with weedguards - overall length exceeds six inches...
Capt. Bob; what size perfect popper are you putting on a #1 Mustad #34007?
Thanks

Move your background back as far as you can. Black Duvetyne absorbs light. Available from theatrical supply companies and photo specialties shops. Black velour from a fabric store will also work. Black felt isn't as black as either of the above.

Mike is right; a brush made of thread will unravel.
Colored beading wire is available at Craft Sores. Haven't tried it yet but it looks good.

Bob,
Everything in your post about bonefish flies was helpful. I, for one, am glad you got carried away, and hope you do so again sometime soon.
