I have 7 Lamsons of different sizes and models. Have fished on beaches and in really nasty cold conditions with them and never had one problem. Getting sand in the reel has not been an issue at all.

What size egg paterns do you fish for steelhead?
thmech replied to despatiesim's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
I have caught steelhead in the great lakes and northwest on eggs patterns as small as 18. When the fish are actively spawning they will key in on the smaller size of the freshly laid eggs. Later on it does not seem to matter. I always have with me sizes 8 through 18 just in case. -
I have quit cold turkey too many times to count. Trying chantix at the moment. Hope it works, I really want to quit. Congratulations and hats off to those who have done so.

Teaching a buddy to cast a spey rig last fall. Somehow he got me behind the shoulder with a nice meaty 3/0 fly. That one stung real good.

Unfortunately, yes. First time was steelhead fishing in january in Michigan. Waded out a bit too far and stepped off a ledge. That water is really cold that time of year!

Tying is an obsession, but a good one. I have moved across country twice and every time I have had to pack up tying "stuff" I have found way too much to pack. I did find my wife through tying though. Guess it's not all bad.

Welcome to the insanity of fly fishing/tying.

back pack, sling pack, chest pack.....
thmech replied to flytire's topic in Fly Fishing Gear & Techniques
I use a Patgonia bag that I have had for awhile. It can be a hip pac, a shoulder bag or a sling pack. On days I will be out all day I just add a piece to it and it gets bigger. On short trips I take it as just a bag. Really handy. -
Yes it is. Originally from Michigan, then the Oregon coast.

Joined this forum a bunch of years ago. Then decided to get married, move all the way across country, have three kids and 2 dogs, then move back. Now have a little time to start tying again and am really enjoying it. Actually met my wife through fly fishing and am now teaching my kids the art.

First thing is to pick a couple patterns you want to fish. As peterjay said, you will end up with a ton of stuff you will never use otherwise. Most guys that have fished awhile have just a few patterns they fish, no need to tie every new recipe you see in a magazine. That cuts down on costs considerably.

The media blows everyting out of proportion. While we get to hear about the new prince, I guess there is nothing more important happening in the world. I am very happy for them because I know how exciting and important having a child is, but let them have some peace and tell us some actual news.

Probably a good idea. Ever since that first trip she looks at me even stranger than ussual when I ask her if she wants to go in the winter.

And the really cool thing was that she did not complain once. That was 13 years ago, now I take her and our three monkeys fishing.

Thinking about building my first fly rod
thmech replied to fly123's topic in Fly Fishing Gear & Techniques
don't get him started on that. It's worse than graphite -
My wife and I met through fly fishing. She showed at a tying event I was demonstrating at and asked if I would take her fishing. After 5 hours steelhead fishing with 3 feet of snow on the ground, I knew it was all over.

I feel your pain. Moved to the middle of Wisconsin from the Oregon coast where there are fishing oppurtunities all over(if you know how to find them). Moved there from the shores of the Pere Marquette and Manistee rivers. There are fish here, just not as easy to find.We moved here for my wifes dream job as well.

Thinking about building my first fly rod
thmech replied to fly123's topic in Fly Fishing Gear & Techniques
DON'T DO IT!!!!!!! If you make one, you will make many more. Actually it's more satisfying than buying a new really expensive one, for sure. I don't put hook keepers on mine and grip diameter is personal preferance. If you really get serious you may start turning your own grips. Then you can make whatever size and diameter you like best. I started out building up a blank that was given to me, now I have more than 60 in the rafters. That's not counting the ones I have built for others. It is the best thing to catch a fish on a rod you built casting a fly you tied connected to a leader you tied. Now if I can only figure out how to make the line myself. -
I use an ol makita screw gun which has very low rpm. Works well for dubbing brushes as well as furled leaders I tie up for people.

Things I have learned, that I wish I knew!
thmech replied to Hellgrammite's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Save your money and start buying pre-tied flies. If you do fall through the trap door of tying, make sure you have plenty of space to store all the useless crap you buy over the years for that one great pattern. And then learn that pattern does not really catch fish, probably thought up by some employee of a material company to sell stuff they have too much of. -
I tie my leaders with maxima for the heavier parts down to frog hair for the light stuff.

My 7 year old daughter and 5 year old son tied theie first buggers yesterday. Been teaching them how to cast in the back yard and they seem to really be enjoying it, especially my daughter. It is really great to see the smiling faces when they get a cast right.

I tie my smaller stuff on an old Renzetti Presentation that was given to me. Probably would not buy the same vise with my own money, not a huge fan of the features. My larger flies get tied on a Dyna King Kingfisher. That little vise holds a hook very well.

I live in the Fond Du Lac ares. Have found there is not a ton of trout around this area and have been traveling to find some. Grew up on the west coast of Michigan with trout everywhere, then lived on the Oregon coast with steelhead, this warm water is new to me. Am learning the ropes slowly and enjoying learning how to fish for new critters.

New to the board, not fishing or tying. Heve been throwing flies for 35 years or so, tying for 20 give or take. After three children am finally starting to get back into this almost as much as I would like.
