Sounds like a pretty even split between everyone. Thanks guys, I'll keep using them for streamers and poppers and see how they perform over the long run. Using them for ice fishing sounds like a good idea. They would make it easy to change out lures and jigs in cold weather with numb fingers...

Thanks thanks for the input guys. Mike, I use the same snaps on my pike/muskie leaders. They are definitely more "full proof" in my opinion

Hey guys, I was hoping I could get some opinions on these snaps made by mustad (Picture Attached) . I have been using them for streamers lately, and I really like the convince and ease of use they provide. Also the streamers swim well with them. My only worry is they may bend straight under a lot of pressure. I have yet to tangle with a Big fish while using these. I don't have a reason to think they would fail but I thought I would see if others have used them with success. Thanks! http://www.agmdiscountfishing.co.uk/mustad-ultralight-snap-hook-size-20pcs-p-4452.html

I use the organizers in flytire's first picture for all my beads. I like how they are in separate jars that can be removed.

Hey Cream, Awesome looking bugs, are the second two supposed to be a lizard imitation? I see they have dumbbell eyes...

Musky and Pike Gear and Flies
Troutbum11 replied to Troutbum11's topic in Fly Fishing Gear & Techniques
Wow...those are some true monsters! That's what I'm after! But arent we all. Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys! its good to know other guys are catching them on 8wts. All i have been hearing lately is at least a 10 but the proof is in those pictures for sure! I tend to enjoy lighter tackle anyway. I hope to have some pics of a few fish soon! akTrap- Is that deceiver all bucktail? it looks like you have some synthetics mixed in there like EP fibers or something...? -
That is a nice looking pattern. Hope it fishes well for ya! What size hook are you using on that?

Hey guys, So I just bought a boat and I am hoping to target musky and pike a lot this coming spring and fall. Right now I just have and 8wt with full sinking line. I am hoping someday to get a 10wt but thats not an option right now. I have started to tie up some musky and pike flies which include many of my own designs plus some of Blane Chockletts "t-bones" So my questions are... How under-gunned will I be with an 8wt? I'm pretty confident I can land these fish with and 8wt but I'm not so sure about chucking these huge flies all day with one. Anyone else use an 8? Also any suggestions on colors and your personal preference on flies would be great! Also what kind of Leaders do you prefer? I think I'm going with just straight heavy mono right now....60LB. If any of you are familiar with Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County Maryland or some of the rivers around Morgantown West Virginia, such as the Mon river or Dunkard Creek thats where i will be fishing. Thanks in advance!! -Ryan

Wow Vicrider....those are some impressive stories. Especially the downrigger one!

Steve- I bet those smallmouth did put up one interesting fight! that would be awesome on streamers...

I was out fishing on one of my favorite brook trout streams a few weeks ago and was able to land two fish at once! This was on a very small wooly bugger with a hares ear dropper. I have heard of this happening before but this is my first...especially with trout. Any one else experience this before?

I have used plastic beads for some applications. Mostly as spacer beads on articulated stream patterns.
-
yep...natural rabbit.

I have also heard good things about TFO Esox. Blane Chochlett designed it for muskie. Met him and heard him talk about the rod and fishing muskies. There are a lot of good features in that rod..

looking good...I will have a nice profile in the water and definitely lots of movement.

Awesome desk.....really like the peg board.

Cool looking tie, I'm sure it will produce.

Neat video, were those fish rising all around you or things falling from trees? -
you can definitely pull it off. Not a problem especially if you not making long casts. It will perform the best with small dries and such but there is no law against throwing on a wooly bugger and seeing what happens.
-
I really like those measurement also. Really cool!
-
Really like it, nice touch with the verse. I bet that was challenging to put on the rod though...

I have tied boxes like these in the past and have included Adams, Hare's ear nymph, wooly buggers, muddlers, and mickey fins as staple fly patterns.
-
Looks good, may want to try to incorporate some marabou in there as well to give it some more movement. I'm sure it will catch fish though. Let us know how It works. Also, I like to use bead wire (just from walmart) along with beads for my joints. Its basically coated stainless steel wire and it works great! Using mono will work, it just may get weaker as time goes on and the fly is fished a few times.
-
In that case it will probably catch fish. Did you have any luck with it yet?

Thanks for the reply. I'll have to look into that.
