  2. I hope this skin was well-sealed in a plastic bag and none of the moths got free. The adult females will likely lay their eggs in anything containing protein. That includes your feathers and furs. You probably won't see the larvae until they have done some damage to your material. This is why ALL my natural materials are stored in Zip-Loc bags with a few crystals of para-dichlorobenzene.

Very well sealed. I think it came with eggs when I got it and now they hatched.. I checked all my other feathers and everything else is perfectly fine. I always keep my materials sealed up. Probably keep this skin in the garage for a while until It's for sure clean from moths.

I think I might try the Cedar method as mothballs make me gag.. Stinks so bad I can taste it..

  3. TMC 2487 Size 12 - 6mm Otter Egg Transparent Apricot - Transparent Red Seed Bead - Otter's Milking Veil - UNI-Thread Trico 17/0 - LocTite Super Glue.

They sell glass red beads that are solid round which I think would be perfect for these flies, but they are only available at 1 online store and you have to buy way too many of them..

  4. OK, I had to look it up, it's just a hen Ringneck Pheasant. Common, plentiful, naturalized throughout much of Europe and N. America, fully legal (in the US). Good wet fly and soft hackle material. The picture you posted is a nice looking pelt, but it seems, to me, a bit overpriced (an eBay special?). As SBPatt and Crackaig have shown, though, you can do a lot with it.

Basically, it can be substituted in any pattern that calls for game bird hackle or body feathers. The wings can sub. for turkey, grouse or guinea.

I seen a couple website that sold these skins and most where pretty tight like the partridge I see online sold in the packages.

Usually cost around $15 plus shipping. This one was $15, but the shipping cost was $9 after I talked his down from his $15 he was asking, but he usually sends them all spread out on a big piece of cardboard. Top price was paid for this skin, so it wasn't a "deal" but hopefully it was a good investment, if not, I will just sell it and buy something else :)

  5. I would snip or pluck the feathers and store them in baggies labelled with source location (ie: left wing primaries, left wing secondaries, marginal coverts, etc.) The feathers should be more-or-less odourless if there is no fat or meat attached to them.

I was kinda thinking about doing that also. I'm just worried about since the skin is so soft now, there may be some moisture on the feathers stems with who knows what on it?

Maybe I can just treat the feathers I pluck off the skin?

  6. I purchased from Ebay many times and usually get great results, but this time..

I think the person just had no idea what he was doing. I looked up the person online since he included a business card for his fly tying store and I see the guy is in his own world of fly tying. His website is very bad, his material page doesn't even have a page and his streamer flies he sell are like the ones I tied on my first week of fly tying and his video of him teaching someone how to tie flies are some of the worst fly tying I have ever seen.. I mean really bad. Like leave you sitting there like ???

I think you are right about the smell coming from the skull and looking at it more, you are right again. The skin is very soft and has alot of moisture..

I greatly appreciate the how to on how to fix this skin, but I think I will just get rid of it to someone who wants it and wants to mess with it. Just too much trouble for a skin I'm not that interested in and also, I don't like messing with birds in that kind of way. I'm not a hunter, so scrapping dead bird skins and cutting away skin from the skull is just not for me lol.. I just wanted some feathers to add to my collection smile.png lesson learned on this one..

I liked it because it was different, small feathers and I figured I could do something with some of the small feathers. No pattern for these feathers that I have seen, I just thought I would use them for wet flies or a little hackle behind the wet fly hackle to tie something a little different.

The skin is a Roller bird. Not sure if ok to sell or not?

  7. I just purchased a bird skin from Ebay and I open the bag and it smells like a dead bird.. I got a refund for it, but what do I do with it now?

I don't want to put any more money into it since I wanted it for the price, but not more then what I paid, but can it even be saved?

I feel like i need to handle it with a face mask and rubber gloves..

  8. I'm looking for a good hair to tie some Steelhead or salmon flies that is not too expensive since I would like to get more then 1 color and I'm on a budget.

Buck tail seems to be too thick and long. Calf tail seems to crinkly and fox tail I think might be a little too soft and too much waste, even though I can use the under fur on something else, but it's also expensive when you have to buy a few different colors. Is there any good cheap alternatives that come in bright colors?

Here some pictures of examples of the types of flies I want to tie. I'm not going to be tying the patterns shown, but this is just a example of the type of hair I'm looking for and kind a pretty much what I'm going to be doing with it.

And can someone edit the title to my post and add the is after the word what.. It's annoying me everything I look at it..

  9. On the water I don't think you'll notice a difference (other than the tail will last longer). At the bench it'll be easier and less messy. It is a little more expensive though. I have it available for salmon flies so use it for those also. I would have to order in marabou.

    Cheers,

    C.

That's good to know, thank you. I did Notice it was more expensive, so I just got to plan more wisely on my purchase instead of just grabbing a bag I think I might use.

yes you can use it or just about anything else for that matter

    be creative. experiment

Yeah, I need some more now biggrin.png The red I just got is for the Poker shrimp. You don't get much for the price..

  10. HMH is a good vise and a good company. I got my HMH SX from someone online for $100.00 and It seemed to be brand new. Works great and looks great.

Look all over the internet and see what styles look nice to you, then once you made a list of all the ones you like, start searching to find the cheapest ones. Then, once you find the one you really want, try finding it on a forum in the classified section or a online store that has a really good sale going. Spend atleast $100+ on a vise. Buy what you want and can be happy with or every time you tie a fly, you wish you had something better.
