  1. I love my 12.6/5wt spey. EXCELLENT FIRST CHOICE! Absolutely love the feel of that taper. Great rod for the White. If you haven't made a selection on lines: I'd recommend using one reel. Back it and purchase a 35lb Lazer line by OPST for your running line. On the end of the running line, put a large loop tied in a triple surgeon. This loop should be big enough to slide a line-cassette through it. As a beginner, you'll want a Skagit line. Pronounced SKA-JIT not SKA-GET. I personally like Rio heads and tips. I've used OPST and RIO - prefer the Rio branded stuff. The Skagit Max Short and Trout Spey Skagit are great lines. You'll need a light to medium set of MOW tips to realize the full function of these lines. Then you'll need some mono line to attach to the end as your leader. I also like the Rio Trout Spey and Scandi Short heads for my lighter fly/delicate presentation work. You can switch these heads out on the side of the river with that big loop I mentioned earlier. One reel - separate line systems = different conditions. If the water is slow, clear and the fish spooky - go with the trout spey or scandi short. The Trout Spey head is developed to be a tweener between Skagit and Scandi. I use this head 75% of the time. Works great with both types of casting - Skagit and Scandi. Super versatile. I also carry a Rio Switch line for my switch rods, not my 12.6/5 weight. It's a great nymphing line. If you need to drop a nymph line, use a trout spey head. It should work....but the mending will be a little tricky.
  2. I started with a Peak Rotary and their standard jaw. Decent vise for the money. Once I heard about the hook range on the standard jaw from Dyna-King, I quickly purchased a Professional and an Ultimate Indexer after relegating my Peak to Tube duty. By the way, I got a Barracuda price for the Ultimate Indexer. I couldn't pass it up at that price. You can't beat Dyna-King's 8/0-24 jaw. The Dyna-Kings will last my lifetime and will definitely be handed down to the next generation should they want it.
  3. Nice fly. Only addition I may make is an additional piece of foam on top to add some more resistance for the gurgler motion. While i enjoyed the trumpet, the rest of it was a little too jazzy for me.....but hey, i have a volume switch. :-). Thanks again. i may tie some up today.
  4. Personally, I use the TLAR method for hackle - "That looks about right". :-) This is usually two wraps of a good partridge feather without stripping one side, If you strip the feathers from one side or you're tying a flymph, then 3-4 wraps makes sense. I prefer to keep it sparse for slow currents and will use my heavier hackled flies (and my uglies ties) on fast water. Big Picture - the fish don't care how heavily hackled or sparse it is, so long as it moves and looks alive.
  5. Just tied one of these in Chartreuse..... :-)
  6. I love the fact you've overcome the adversity to put out such nice flies. BRAVO!
  7. Very happy with my purchases on the InTheRiffle site. He has a wide assortment of tying videos to boot. You can learn a lot from James Spicer. :-)
  8. Welcome. Joined recently myself....headed to the Pan tomorrow. :-)
  9. http://intheriffle.com has always been a good resource. The guy who owns it, James Spicer, used to guide in Colorado. Good guy with some excellent tying videos. He literally taught me to tie most of my favorite patterns ...along with Craven's and Barr's books. As a result of his helping me, I always try to help him when I can. Give him a shot.... I think you'll like his videos and materials.
  10. I like the Charlie Craven book, "Basic Fly Tying" and Dave Hughes' Essential Trout Flies. I've also enjoyed Barr's flies by John Barr. Other things that have helped me along are www.intheriffle.com , YouTube: Dave McPhail and Theo Anest.
  11. In Colorado, I tie this fly in olive for the early season and tan in the latter part of the season.
  12. I use a Peak Rotary and am very pleased with it.
