  1. I use barred ginger feathers for the hackle on the Chili Pepper Wooly Bugger
  2. Hello fellow fly tiers time to expand my fly inventory I've been thinking of adding the copper john to my fly book, but I've been wondering if anybody has had any problem with the copper oxidizing once they use the fly ?
  3. Does any one have any idea where I could buy the felt pages that go into a Fly Wallet I think they are about 3 inches X 6 inches X 3/16 or 1/4 thick something like that.
  4. Ok I guess I should have added some more info as far as fly's I guess I use Woolley buggers the most size 10 -2x long followed by wet fly's sizes from 10 _ 14 and nymphs sizes 12 & 14 that's probably 99% of what I fish. I did take notice the price of tippet material weather its mono or fluorocarbon is ridiculous for what you pay for a small spool you could buy a large spool of spinning line. A few years back I bought a spool of tippet material not sure what brand it was but I remember it was 4 pound test, then a few weeks later I saw the same brand name 4 lb. in a large spinning spool size I bought it and had a guy check the size with a micrometer it was exactly the same, not being a millionaire I've been using spinning line since. It seems to me anything associated with fly fishing has a hi price attached to it, now I'm thinking maybe I got into a rich mans sport.
  5. Hope somebody can give me some help on this one, I never had any formal training, or much training at all for that matter on fly fishing. Over the years one or two guys told me that the water around where I fish never gets crystal clear so I could get away with a 3X tippet unless the water gets really clear then I would have to go smaller, that was using the old monofilament tippet. But from what I've been reading about the new fluorocarbon tippet material could you go to maybe a 2X tippet ?
  6. I've taken notice I can get dry fly hooks in turned down eyes or straight eyes, what's the difference ? is there an advantage of one over the other ?
  7. Wondering if anybody knows what a Mustad 9578A hook is ? std. long, short, wet, dry ? spent hours researching didn't find anything not listed on any chart I've found.
  8. Now that trout season is just about over, its time to start tying for next year. I've heard about CDC feathers and from a few articles I've read I'm going to give it a try, My question is what are the 2 or 3 most popular colors, I would like to give them a try without buying every color under the sun, I made that mistake a few times.
  9. Have to thank Rockworm for the correct spelling, and the correct description and Mvendon your 100% correct on the description my only problem is finding them when you live in Hicksville with no fly tying stores near by what can I say Cabalas is about 30 miles away but personally I'm not a fan, just don't think they carry quality stuff. So I save all my pennies and go to the fly tying show in NJ where I buy 99% of my needs, but still the Coch-y-Bondhu eludes me.
  10. Hope I'm in the right forum for this question, every time I ask about cochie bon du necks or saddles ( hope that's spelled right ) I wind up with furnace hackle, so is cochie bon du a flute or a freak of nature ?
  11. Don't know if this will help you kerusso but I buy my hooks at flyshack $6.99 a hundred and he really carries a hell of a selection.
  12. Hoping I can get some help on this one, I'm looking for a new fly reel I talked to a guy who only uses Scientific Angler System 6 he has a couple and says its a life time reel and has a fantastic drag and if it does wear out they will fix it free. My problem is I cant afford a reel like that, but I have found a Scientific Angler System 2 . Can anybody tell me the difference between a 6 and a 2 ? How about the drag does it have one and how does it work ? and over all what's your thoughts on a system 2 verses a 6 Thanks for any info you can supply me with ?
  13. Wow seeing is believing I thought there might have been a few thousandth of an inch difference between brands but certainly not that much that you could see by just looking at them thanks a lot Ed
  14. Thanks for all the info guys as for the 3 different lengths even thou they were all size 12 that really shocked me I really thought there was a standard that the hook company's went by, guess I'm going to have to go by what looks right to me , I'm still setting here shaking my head in disbelief.
  15. Thanks for the info learned something every day, I use to get Daiichi hooks from a guy for $9.00 a hundred for anybody that just walked in off the street he would charge them $9.75 a hundred the bad news he retired . I thought no big deal I'll just buy then off the internet when I saw there crazy prices I thought hell no I'm not going to pay for somebody to retire over night. But your right Saber makes a nice hook and the price well I guess that's not to bad, My only problem is they don't carry all that many styles in wet fly's you can get 1X 2X 3X 4X long or 1X short but not a standard length wet fly hook, as for dry fly hooks they carry standard lengths but I have a few fly patterns that call for 1X 2X 3X short. I could drop down one size if I needed a #12 1X short I could drop down to a 14 but I guess I'm just an old stick in the mud that's use to the way things use to be, but anyway thanks for your imput Ed
  16. Hoping somebody can help me I'll be retiring soon and I need to build up my hook stock, I know I wont be buying much once I retire guess I gave away to many flys over the years, anyway I've found a good source for wet fly hooks and some try hooks, what I'm really in need of is 1X short dry fly hooks I always try to buy my hooks in min. of 1000 hooks thanks in advance for any help.
  17. Thanks to all the wonderful reply's I have figured out what my problem was, I don't know exactly why but hands really sweat while tying thus getting my thread wet when I apply the lacquer so I'm now letting all my fly's set at least a week to make sure the head is dry before I apply the head lacquer, Once again thanks to everybody.
  18. I think Mikechell might have hit the nail on the head with my whiting problem , I tie all year long and it might have tied some in the heat and humidity of the summer, I don't know it makes any difference but I've been using Rumpf head cement, I originally said Lacquer as that was all my suppler carried, he has since closed his store so I started using Rumpf head cement.
  19. Really hoping somebody can help me out on this one, I tie with blk. thread 99% of the time and for some reason over the past year or two after a few months the heads are turning white even new unused flys. Is there a formula for how much lacquer thinner you can use to thin it out, or how many times you can thin it out. I'm at a total loss on this one.
  20. I have thought about buying a magic tool but the price is so far out of my range I've looked at them up close at shows, and lets face it, its nothing but plastic and large O ring and had a price tag of $40.00 at least the one I saw wake up people just cause we have a unique sport its no reason to try and take the food out of our kids mouth, just my thoughts
