  1. Hollow flies as I know them are always tied with buck tail heads. Very sparse, and the buck tail pretty much just makes the profile to the fly.
  2. I use a 9 or 10 ft 7wt depending on where I'm fishing if I'm targeting bass specifically. The 10 footer gets the nod when I know I won't have much back cast room and I'll be doing allot of roll casting. If your not planning on throwing flies over 5' or super heavily weighted stuff all the time, 6 or 7wt would be my suggestion.
  3. Trying to get better at the small stuff. Haven't anything more complicated than a soft hackle or cdc and elk in these sizes in the past. This is a 16. I want to try out in 18 also. Garcia's mini-hot.
  4. Looks to me like the body and head could both use more taper to them. Not too far off otherwise.
  5. Got mine! Thanks bass master!
  6. I can't figure how a couple tufts of marabou would make it weedless. Might tie a couple up with foam cylinders myself though. Not terribly complicated.
  7. I ended up getting a 3wt rod. Thanks for the offer though. Also, that $70 cheeky is a spool only.
  8. I might get a higher quality line if I find one on sale, but I'm still planning on a no name reel. Found a few on amazon that I really like the looks/price of. One from anglers roost is in the list too.
  9. Just an update. Haven't gotten a reel yet, but picked up a cabelas cgr (fiberglass) 5'9" 3wt for under $60 the other day. Can't wait to get a line and reel for it and put it through its paces.
  10. I assume you tie your game changers with ep brushes. Maybe try just tying a sparse tail of ep on a shank off the back and a brush on a hook for the head?
  11. are you asking how to tie an ep minnow? Or just how you think you should configure the articulation? Not familiar with the sf minnow myself. My Personal tale on articulation is, hook in the back for trout/salmon, hook in front on anything else. Only 1 hook unless it's over 6".
  12. Check youtube for the hang time streamer. Some, lots of buck tail, lots of action in the water. Then look at the t-bone musky fly too.
  13. If you're looking for suggestions on what to get, the type of flies you want to tie and what you fish for would be useful for us.
  14. Never put 2&2 together until now, but I think I've used the stuff in Bruce's link. It comes in a bondo fiberglass resin patch kit. It's a thickener for the resin. Couldn't find it separately sold by bondo, but your local auto parts store or body shop may have it. Certainly has the right texture/appearance.
  15. I've tied some of these. I love how they look. They just haven't produced for me as I'd hoped. Have you had any luck on them?
  16. HYDROPHOBIC fumed micro silica that has been treated with silicone oil or a siloxane compound . Source(awesome write up by silver creek): he mentions it in this thread currently over on the fly tying bench section. http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=81856&view=&hl=&fromsearch=1
  17. It depends on the application. For most of the things I use buck tail for, I'd say no. It certainly has its uses. And is great in its own right, but it's lacking in a lot of the desirable qualities that I look for in buck tail. It can foul on the hook quite a bit. It lacks natural taper. And it is very 3 dimensional, making it difficult to make a slim pattern (requires allot of trimming)
  18. Not waterproof. But I've worn them while having about 10" of snow dumped on me in a day of fishing without a break from the weather. My fingers warm right up in a minute or two when I flip the mitts over. Cabelas glomitts. Bulky, but love em in the cold. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Mens-MT-Extreme-II-Glomitts-with-Thinsulate-Insulation/1222750.uts?productVariantId=3361476&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=03601935&rid=20&gclid=Cj0KEQiAkO7CBRDeqJ_ahuiPrtEBEiQAbYupJRPS3mTmUVsGT1zpaBHRYr_-04HGnLotKagflCF9NAoaAvFj8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds
  19. But can they be locked so the whole front page isn't filled with irrelevant 10 year old polls?
  20. trust the professionals opinion about green lenses, or the guy that's never worn green lenses opinion on green lenses. That's op's choice I guess. I've never had a problem with my grey lenses im using now. They're a bit lighter than the amber models I had prior. I find I can wear them longer into the evening, with little to no loss of performance during the day. I've owned the wally world strike kings. They give me a headache in about an hour.
  21. Yeah, not carp at all. I'd throw something sorta vegetable looking at them. Unweighted green wooly bugger? Green soft hackle? Or the previously mentioned berry fly, if they're around now.
  22. Besides the vise, my top would probably be a dubbing twister/dubbing loop spinner. A close second would be the little comb I use to brush out dubbing loops. I think those are my most used tools other than vise, scissors, bobbin holder, head cement.
  23. maui Jims with the green tinted lenses are what were recommended to me by an employee of optometrists office. He said thats the best color for looking through water. I think he said maybe Oakley has a new color that is similar to compete? I've never paid more than 30 bucks for a pastor of glasses myself though. I'm too rough on them. I have flying fisherman brand that I like right now. Grey lens w blue mirror. Edit: I knew the guy personally who gave me the info on the lenses. And the place he works for does not sell either of the lenses he recommended.
