  1. If she fishes it how I've fished rat l traps, with a sharp, fast, jigging retrieve, it's gonna be hard to duplicate that speed. I'd say a slider or dahlberg diver with a rattle fished on a heavy sinking line would be as close as you could get.
  2. Where do you get that sort of eyes from? I'm really interested in these but want to get the right eyes before I start. thanks Matt http://www.flyfishfood.com/2013/10/how-to-make-shrimp-or-crab-mono-eyes.html?m=1
  3. what type of retrieve is she using and what are the typical water conditions? Depth, current, etc. That would help us help you.
  4. just outside of the west end of greensburg, near Seton hill.
  5. Do you think the 105lb wire is about the ideal thickness? Or should I go up a bit in diameter? How does it compare to the thickness of a standard wire hook? And, do you think heavier wire would be too difficult to bend neatly with round nose pliers?
  6. Ha. I didn't even notice that. That's like 20 minutes from my house. Do they have a store front? Looks like a private residence by where they're located.
  7. nice, anyone ever order from here? Are they reputable? I've been displeased with the available jig hook selection at my normal places of purchase. Those hanak hooks look real nice.
  8. My #1 concern with a reel for salmon/steelhead would be the durability of the drag. Hard to judge that in 10 days. 10lb fish making long runs on 4lb tippet is what I think of when I think steelhead. Most reels feel silky smooth at first. When thd 5th fish of the day shows me my backing, I like the confidence my Lamson gives me.
  9. But, imo, that thing probably has no life to it in the water and just the claws probably take an hour to make. He even says he doesn't fish them in the article. Robert M, have you tied/fished this pattern?
  10. That would be; http://thefeatherbender.com/2014/03/13/crayfish-master-class-3/
  11. All these opinions on quality brand name reels, and you went with a no name $125 gamble? Let us know how it works out for you, especially in the long run. I hope it's as nice as it looks.
  12. The tails seem to be the most obvious problem from what I'm seeing. Check out this previous thread on the subject for pointers. http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=72670
  13. What type of dubbing? That can make a big difference in what you can do with it.
  14. This spring, the bigger bluegills at a local lake couldn't get enough of a simple #12 1xl soft hackle with an olive collar(I think I just used acouple turns of strung saddle, nothing fancy), chartreuse thread body and a 1/2" tail of a short single chartreuse sili leg. Had whole schools chasing after it slowly stripped just under the surface. I did some with duck flank collars too, but don't think I ever fished them. This is it in a stocker brown trout. Only photo I think I have of one on hand.
  15. Good stuff. Kudos to you, utyer, for taking so much time to help out a newbie. And also to nwtblaster for bumping this to the top of the beginners section.
  16. Be brave. We've all been down that road. I made my wife find it for me the first time.
  17. If you haven't tried sally's, try it. It's like a buck, and available just about everywhere. I trim about 2/3 the off the bristles off of the brush for finer application.
  18. My pinion on the question at hand is that from purely a visibility standpoint, i am more confident in a flouro leader than a mono one. I have felt at times in very clear water, the clarity of a flouro tippet has improved my fishing.
  19. the main issue with most cheaper vises is the quality of the metal used. Vises are a prime example of "they don't make like they used to". From what I understand the knock offs are from no name company's that don't have to stand by their products. They used inferior materials that cause them to wear out faster. The fact that yours is so old and still working is a testament to this. I believe you said it was a herters? I believe they were about as good as it got for most folks back then. Unfortunately with all things fly tying, quality comes at a mostly ridiculous premium. Any vise you find online in your price range from a REPUTABLE company should serve you well. A knock off with more bells and whistles at a lower price will likely fail you over time and you'll end up spending more in the long run. Good luck in your search. Be patient and watch for sales.
  20. +1 if you expect to lose lots of them, just use marker or nail polish and call it done. You could take a black shape w you for touch ups.
  21. A More in focus pic of the top of the Cape may provide more accurate insight.
  22. congo hair bluegill, 3rd attempt: First try at a deceiver type fly. 4 hackle tail, pearl crystal flash, twisted crystal flash body, craft fur and arctic fox collars. Generic articulated nymph. Too much thorax i think. Ultra simple craw bugger thing. Hope this works. Wont mind losing a dozen of these. Marabou tail, lead eyes, FTD's sea dragon dubbing(sand dragon) in a loop. Apologies for the poorly edited post and meh cel phone pics. Give a new guy a break, eh?
