  1. When I was tying years ago I never ever heard of CDC. But since I quit tying I discovered just what a great feather it is! I love dry fly fishing and these things float so well! But I'm having a tough time learning to use this feather. Making a CDC body is okay . . . I could probably trim it a little tighter but it looks fairly okay to me . . . what do you all think? But the wing/hackle just seems way to sparse and I'm having trouble making it look like Davie's or Tim's or any of the other YouTube tiers I watch. I would appreciate any criticisms or suggestions. This is probably my 20th attempt on a #16! Pretty pathetic I think!
  2. Thinking more and more about this cool fly and the tying process involved, it makes it more clear about the positive aspects of the Norvice. Hmmmm . . . This wouldn't answer the key problem of how to tie on the parachute though . . . still back to the normal way.
  3. SoHo is a great river! Lot's of big fish to frustrate even the most advanced flyfisher!!! But the flies the fish seem to key on tend to be really small . . . 16-24 and usually 20-24! Tough to tie these little buggers until you get more use to tying! Good luck!!
  4. That is a fantastic job! Especially for your FIRST fly!!! Man!!! Yea . . . and as you tie more of that pattern your flies will improve some. But what you did here will DEFINITELY catch fish and a few fishermen! Several really good tips here on how to make it even better!! I can't wait to see some of your other patterns!!!
  5. Makes sense! I was afraid that could be the case. Maybe there is a way to strengthen somehow . . . I love how he does the parachute! But you have to have the body above the hook for that to work. Hmmmmm . . .
  6. Today on YouTube I found videos by Roger Duckworth on what to me was a very unique way to tie an extended body parachute. I had to try it and found it to be quite simple to tie and I imaging it will be an effective fish-getter. . . But I haven't fished with it yet. Lesson #1 Have others tried his innovative approach? What has your experience been fishing it?
  7. Hahaha!! Well . . . maybe so! But I have one I paid $400 for and have been offered a firm $1,000! Must be worth it to some people!! It's a flyfishing one too!
  8. That is exactly what my other Renzetti Traveler looks like! Exactly! I purchased mine in about 2000.
  9. I guess the frustrating part is I bought this from a Renzetti dealer. If the pedestal is after-market I had no idea. And I'm pretty disappointed in that Renzetti dealer!! But like I keep telling myself . . . it really shouldn't matter . . . the vice is awesome and I've used it to tie 1,000's of flies!
  10. My Chris Reeve's are limited . . . The Inkosi is for me to use! A small Sebenza with Box Elder burel inlays to pass to my daughter and a "Pheasant Tail" large Sebenza for my son.
  11. Actually . . . one of those pictures was the newer Traveler's vice. My mistake!!
  12. I'm blown away that you KNEW that was a Chris Reeve Inkosi!!!
  13. Renzetti has agreed that both stems and heads are 100% Renzetti! What just makes no sense to me is that the original stem was milled out especially to fit the original pedestal base. But you're right . . . I'm 100% happy!
  14. Sorry these pictures got flipped somehow! Not sure how to fix that!!!
  15. Back in 1984-6 (I think) I bought a Renzetti vice from one of my favorite fly shop in Charlotte, NC. No box . . . I was just told it was a Renzetti. I honestly had never heard of a Renzetti before but they let me tie a few flies on the vice and I was sold! My eyes got bad and I gave this vice to one son and purchased a Renzetti Traveler for my other son. Years go by. My sons' still fly fish with a passion, but no longer tie flies. And after a few unique eye operations (Thank you UNC and DUKE!) I can see well again and I'm back tying flies!! But after sending my first vice back to Renzetti, questions have arisen!! Renzetti agrees that the stems and heads are both Renzetti stems and heads . . . but they differ! But Renzetti says they have never made a pedestal out of brass! BUT . . . the old stem has been milled out to make everything fit nicely! (The Traveler stem is more narrow than the older stem! None of this matters! I have two Renzetti vices that are 100% perfect! But the older one has a pedestal that has a brass fitting to the stem (which Renzetti says they have never done except on Presentation 400 or Master Vices!!). My guess is that the older vice I have is a "prototype version" of the Traveler vice. Renzetti doesn't believe the older pedestal is theirs (although the stem has been milled out to make everything fit! perfectly). None of this matters at all! I'm totally happy with both vices! But I just think it's interesting and perhaps I have a Renzetti prototype vice . . . that is pretty cool! Maybe someone out there has more information . . .
  16. I really like the new site! And I LOVE your videos! Been a subscriber for awhile! (Oh . . . by the way the link to the "Mono Eyes" video is broken . . .
  17. This really helps me! Thanks folks!
  18. The article Fishinguy had the link for indicates that this resin stuff can stay tacky and I didn't test to see if it was cured or just tacky! (I'm new to all this modern fly tying stuff!) I just did another fly and I'm pretty sure it was cured but just tacky. I've covered it with some Hard as Nails so once that dries I'll know for sure! Thanks everyone for the education! I'm sure I'm going to be needing lessons in the future!!
  19. I bought a small UV light and some Solarex finish. At first I liked the results. The finish got hard in just a few seconds but I was using the "thin." Yesterday I used some of the thicker finish and I could never get the light to harden it. (I finally set it outside in the sun!) The light was a very inexpensive light (less than $10) and I see plenty of these lights costing up to $60-$70. Do I need to spend that kind of money for a UV light???
  20. That just may be the single best advice I've ever read!!! I started fly fishing in 1972 . . . totally self-taught! I was fishing small streams and technique didn't really matter that much. I got where I could place the fly where I wanted it and I caught fish. But my technique sucked! For the last 10 years I've been trying to "unlearn" all my casting mistakes!
  21. You're cutting me a break! But thanks! Thank God for a few stupid fish!! Hahaha!
  22. Thanks you all for the welcome and encouragement! And Mikechell . . . this just shows off my fly fishing skills!!! I believe that was a purchased fly (ugh!) Okay . . . here three pictures! A parachute attempt. Tail too long, hackle too big I know. But I'm hoping the trout wan't care that much. Next is a bunch of smaller nymphs (a few bigger). Also a CDC . . . never tied a CDC before so this is definitely a learning experience! Criticisms will not hurt me! That's how we all learn . . . just like my new 14 year old friend FlatsRoamer said!
