Ok, let me see if I understand. Bear with me I use to ride the short bus. I should "experiment" with different line weights every time I purchase a new rod because the manufacturers can't be trusted to label their own rods correctly? With that said, wouldn't that GREATLY be influenced by my lack of casting ability? I cast o.k. In a pond. I think I can get it out there pretty good (50' plus) not always the delicate placement we all prefer. The occasional "cannon ball" happens because I still am trying to muscle it. But now I will try my 3wt. Line on my 4 wt rod and see what happens. I don't know that I'll be able to tell the difference.

I have a 3wt and a 5wt rod and reel. Would you suggest trying those reels on this 4wt rod to see which size line works best?

Purchased a new TFO Signature series #4 rod and placed a Ross reel on it. Prior to purchasing the line the salesman tried to talk me into getting one size larger line WF5F. He said I'll be able to cast farther with it and that he does this all the time. I declined and purchased Rio WF4F line. Does anyone here put one size larger line on a rod?

Semi-newbie to fly fishing. Although I have been pan fishing for a few years my knowledge is very limited. Starting to get back into it lately and would like to upgrade. I'm thinking of the TFO Signature Series in a 4 or 5 wt. 8.5' or 9' Anyone here experienced with this model? Trying to keep the rod and reel combo around $200.

Wow! My dumb question sure triggered a lot of responses! Thanks guys. Going back to my OP, I took my reel apart and couldn't figure out how to switch it over so I just stripped all the line off and re-wound it back on the other way. But, now when I strip line there is no clicking sound but when I right hand reel in the excess line it makes the clicking sound. I guess I'll just have to get used to it. BTW my reel is a Bass Pro Shop model CV2 I bought it a few years ago with the rod as a package. 3wt 7'9" I'm still learning to cast this rod. I find it more difficult than my 5wt 8' Redington.

FlaFly, thanks for the reminder. I supposed I should have been more specific. I hand reel the fish but when gathering the line in my crank is on the left side. I am a left handed caster and prefer to crank on the right side. All my spinning reels I've switched over to right hand. I did not know fly reels were reversible. I'll see if I can figure out how to switch them over.

Dumb question here. Are all fly reels designed to be left handed crank?

Sounds awesome. I was in Manning about a month ago. My job has me traveling all over S.C. Two more years and I'll join you in retirement! I've never done any saltwater fly fishing but I've heard those red fish can be a challenge.

Thanks everyone for the info. I apologize for not being specific on my location. I am from South Carolina. I mainly fish for bream and bass. But mainly bream (pronounced "brim" in S.C.) the word bream represents all panfish. As I said earlier I have two farm ponds I fish in mostly. It keeps me in practice for maybe one day actually wading a blue ribbon stream somewhere. Bank fishing makes you learn to cast longer than you normally would stream fishing that's for sure. I will watch the video attachments with great enthusiasm and thank you for your support.

Hello everyone, I just joined this forum a few minutes ago and think I'm going to really enjoy the experience. Ive been into fly fishing for some years now, mainly panfish and bass. We don't have much trout down here in the south but have done some trout fishing in Montana a few years back. I own two ponds that are great for testing my fly's. Although I am terrible at tying and in no way would win any competitions I have been successful in fooling the fish and that's all that matters to me. My question is; I am left handed and although I can do many things with my right hand when I tie and cast I use my left hand. With that being said I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use that funny shaped tool that is supposed to tie off the thread upon completion. Is it for right hand only? Is there any videos that SLOWLY explain the procedure? Thanks
