  1. How shocked I was to hear of Mr. Norlander passing. He was a good fella, met him through a few short emails he answers of mine. Even though I purchased his vice second hand he was happy to answer questions I had in a timely manner and with such great customer service! Where else would the company's namesake be so personable and caring? I'm honored to have his vise on my tying table Prayers to his family
  2. Thank you for taking the time to show how this is done gonna try a few for next season
  3. I just got a new spool, and dropped it while tying, what a mess!
  4. I see this is a few years old but still valuable. Yes I make my own dubbing, I run a trap line and often have furs that don't make the grade, They get used for fishing, grey fox red fox coyote, mink. Skunk, ground hog, raccoon, possum, beaver, squirrels. I get other critters too like bobcat and river otter but they don't get used for fishing I also raise rabbits for food and keep all the hides to mix in. I figure I have enough raw dubbing materials to start dying them to make batched mixes. Just got into dubbing brushes and have been experimenting with them. There is a lot to be said of hot melt glue too I love to use it to build bodies it sinks very good and holds everything together so well.
  5. Very nice thanks for sharing
  6. FlaFly yes my memory of my 1st fly was memorable and will be treasured by me for as long as I can keep my memory, but a SBS of that would hardly qualify to be placed beside the beautiful flies that are tied and displayed by other FTF members.
  7. Bringing back some memories of fishing Oakdale I wish I could remember the water I fished there got into some monster trout. Good luck and make a stop at Mt. Mikes pizza I used to manage all of em owned by John Maddox. They had a very good pizza
  8. And to think I thought I was the only person to think outside the box of cheap on hand stuff to make into flyfishing gear! Your my new hero! I'm have been working on an idea of a thread bobbin have you made any of your own?
  9. Thank you all for your advice, Silver creek your info is exactly what I'm looking for thank you Sir
  10. Thanks for the warm welcomes, I wish I had that fly I think it was tore up by blue gills, wish I had it though it would be framed.
  11. Hello, been snooping around for a few weeks. I began my fly fishing when I was about 10 my uncle took me to an outdoor hunting and fishing expo in San Mateo. There was a man who came over the loud speaker announcing that there will be fly casting instruction. At the time I never heard of fly fishing but begged my uncle to let me go and try. I waited in line and intently watched others cast about ten feet of red yarn . When it was my turn I just ate it up! We got home and for weeks all I could think or talk about was casting with that rod. My uncle gave me a 6 wt Fenwick and I practiced day in and out. I was able to save from mowing lawns and purchased line and reel from bass pro. My first fly was one I made. I snipped the snelled knot from a eagle claw hook pack, stole some thread from mom, found some feathers from wall hanging decorations and feather dusters. Trying to hold that hook and tie the fly was a chore but I did it. I remember having some old underwear the bands were busting out so I tied those in too. My first trip to the city pond and I watched a brim take that fly from the surface and that was that. I was walking on air and thought I was the master! Where ever we vacationed I never left home without my rod I caught fish in Oregon, Washington Cali and Utah! My uncle bout me a cheap little vise some equipment and materials. I started tying and was only limited by my imagination. I grew up joined the Army was infantry and hadn't fly fished for nearly 20 years maybe once or twice in that time but the rod adorned my wall and memory. A few weeks ago my little girl and I went to a little stocked stream I brought my flyrod and wow what a great time I ended up breaking the 1st foot of the rod I was crushed, but it gave me an excuse to buy some new gear which I did later that week. I've gotten to fish a half dozen times in the last three weeks and feel like I did when I was 10. I've begun to tie flies as well but find it's difficult with my illness to hold my hand steady. I'm a retired Deputy held many positions but I'm most proud of holding the swat sniper position on our team for over 7 years. I was diagnosed with two rare illnesses that forced me to take a medical retirement. My wife and I along with our four children left southern NV and moved to TN. I hunt, trap spend countless hours with my children. I'm conservative and love God with everything I am. Wow didn't realize I've typed so much sorry. I hope to make some new friends and learning again about fly fishing and tying flies please feel free to pipe in and share your experience and advise
  12. Hey y'all I was out the other day with my daughter doing some nyphing at a stocked creek. I could easily see the trout take the nymph and "spit" it. If I watched I could set the hook but I got to thinking what if I couldn't see the fish take the nymph. So I started to watch the leader there was no visual clue that the trout was taking the fly it went in its mouth and out. I'm fishing a size 18 yellow bead head. I was able to catch a few with 20 brassy too but it seemed the take was even less noticeable watching. I'm using 12' leader with no fly line out similar to Czech. But using only one fly. I've been outta the game for 17 years due to living in the Las Vegas area but since I retired I moved to TN and dug my gear out. Have been at it a few times this last month forgot how much I loved flyfishing and tying, hope you can give me some suggestions thanks
