  1. I just started this to. I only been using craft fur. Adding a little flash here and there. Was going to build my own with a drill or motor. But I set my rotary vice up for this. Dont need more clutter. Its slower but you will have more control.
  2. My Music. I have to have my Bluetooth speaker and Pandora playing.
  3. Have to reply to a post here on my upgraded vice. The Tier McFlier True Rotary. Been using it for two months now. Wow, this is worth way more. Smooth rotation. Well made. The only flaw.. old style jaws. Big deal. Still holds the hook tight and dont slip. Just saying if any one wanted to buy a inexpensive rotary without spending a lot. Take a look at this. I do not work or in anyway affiliated with them. Just a cheap bastard.
  4. I have a couple stand up paddle boards. I can only paddle them. No way would i be able to keep my balance to fly fish. But have use it to get to places to fish. Its not a boat, so you would be always drifting. But on a small lake or pond where wind or current is not a problem, very doable is you have good balance. I would use a SUP for pleasure and get a kayak. Anchor down. And better equipped for fishing. Same prices and weight.
  5. I dont fish most of the flies i tie. I give them away. I just like the hobby and tying them.
  6. A hungry bass will eat just about anything. But then again, you need to see if it does catch fish.
  7. I bought a used fly tying lot on e bay. Always wanted to do it but if I didnt like it Back on ebay it goes. Turns out I did. Upgraded the vice since then and have bought a lot more there. Plus made some really nice homemade tools and stuff. I have about 2 years in. So im not a vet. I started with you tube vids. Books and sites that give a step by step instructions. My first was the wooly bugger, simple bucktails, streammers, nymphs. I now tie mostly for bass. Popper, gurglers and many others. Keep it simple. Learn the basics first. I sat at my bench just tying knots with the whip finisher. Then just dubbing. I thing a good you tube vid is beginner fly tying tips- part 1 all the ways to part 12. Worth watching. Teaches all the basics. Its like a class on fly tying.
  8. Very good likeness and good choice of crustacean. Definitely a bottom feeder.
  9. Hi, Chia. Im am far from anyone that can identify a fly. But I am going with a leech/bugger cross called the black cat. If you google- leech/bugger cross called the black cat. Then click on fly fishing in yellowstone natiional park: halloween flies. Scroll down to it. Its a lot fuller than yours. Yea? NA? Maybe?
  10. Adam that is a great job, nice clean work! If some would like a fast an easy hair packer. Take a 6" long 3/4" copper pipe. Glue two 3/4" caps on each end. Drill a different size hole through each cap for the 2 hook sizes you use the most.
  11. Its not really a regret. But my vise. I cant seem spending hundreds on a hook holder. I bought a nice rotary, And totally happy with it. I have to stop looking at them I guess. I keep looking and thinking...I could have that one for $50 more.
  12. I have that same problem. There is a flee market every weekend by me. I seem to have some kind of radar on who is selling rods and reels.
  13. Most of the fly tying stuff I have is from estate sale and e bay. Plus books dont go out of date with fly tying. Best find for me was 3 S&M bobbins, $1 each! I thought they where hand made bobbins at first. But are the real deal.
  14. As a beginner I do have a laptop by my bench. I have watched many You Tube videos and found a lot that are good. But I came across in the riffle.. http://intheriffle.com/ Check it out, step by step flies of all types and skill level. Easy to understand. Has tips and tricks. And a sections on knots and how to section. What are your favorite sites you go to.
  15. WOW! I like all 3. Your vise is something showoff for sure. Its a piece of art. Im not into 3D printing...But it looking like maybe I should.
  16. Same here, Some new tiers have asked what books they should buy. This forum is one good book to have. We all run into the same issues at one time or another. My wife has asked,, How long have you been on the laptop. I was just reading the Q and A, one after the other. I was addicted.
  17. I am a newbie here. As I started to hit all the topics and info. I stuck to the beginners and fly tying bench the most. Was reading only the new post or first few pages. But I found if you start with the oldest tread and read toward the first one, you get so much more out of the forum. Some go back to 2003. And if you click the page number, you can jump to what page you left off. Some really good info on here. Dont miss out by not taking the time to read them.
  18. New to fly tying myself. As I read all the post here on this topic. Im going with Fatman's advice on the online... Fly Anglers On Line fly tying series. ITS FREE! and at has advice for the beginner to advanced. Take a look at it. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/ There is alto of great info here.
  19. Thats what I sort of did. I cut the head off one. Then glued and wrapped some Velcro around it. You then get to use all sides of the brush.
  20. Yes, some what. But free, fast and easy... Still talking about the can opener?? Took me all about 1/2 hour. Works great.
  21. Thought I would share this. Just picked up a new vise to replace my old Thompson pro. Thinking that I would put away the old one, but seems it still had a use. Problem was both are clamps. So instead of just buying a pedestal, I had a steel shim laying around and a bushing with a lock nut. A drill, JB weld, thumb screw and some paint later its done. Didnt glue on a cork bottom yet, but I will. The dry flyer was even easier. Have heard some use the motor for this. Why not use the whole can opener? I replaced the switch with a toggle switch. Unscrewed the wheel that turned the cans. Was on a 1/4" bolt. So I put on a nut..1/2 ways then a 1' 1/2 bolt. Attached a U clamp I had laying around to the other end. Push some foam on and its ready.
  22. tidewaterfly, That what I am saying. Like your Clouser... Im not trying to re invent the wheel. Just use what works for me. And what I have on hand. My flies are not going in a shadow box to be displayed. I am far, far from that. Heck, at 52 I just want to sit down and enjoy tying. I got started because I was looking for a hobby. The one thing I have found is your always asking your self..Can I use that in a fly. And i all so pick up road kill.
  23. I use E-Bay for a lot of stuff. I buy U.S. and over sea's. E bay will show you the dollar exchange and total price. My advice to you would be learn how to do e- mail, Have a credit card linked to E bay. And you set. You can bid, buy or make an offer.
  24. I dont care where it started. It a great idea and Im trying it out. Have a white roll in the kitchen drawer. Something else that I will claim. Thats the liner not the granite.
  25. I was stealing them from my wife and daughter. Finally got caught. Now I head to the dollar store or Walmart. It is weird standing in the nail isle checking out the colors when another women is also there.
