  1. From the news report- Redears commonly grow to impressive sizes at Lake Havasu, likely by feeding on the reservoir’s invasive quagga mussels. Redears have teeth in their throats that allow them to break the shells of snails and mussels. Lake Havasu’s average redear before the presence of quagga muscles was just over 2 pounds, but they’ve gotten bigger and bigger ever since.
  2. Good couple of days on the Chauga. Two of many taken on GRHE and the squirrel tailed bugger (Chartreuse band). First time taking my dog down to the river. Didn't lose him so I may try it again!
  3. A variety of flies destined for my local river. Brought the Renzetti up as primary vice for the new space. Squirrel tailed buggers, Weighted GRHE, Zonker streamers, F flies. Results in Fish Pictures
  4. Just to be clear, they aren't regals. They stick when you rotate them and the set screws don't hold everything in place as you would like. But they are inexpensive and work. I picked mine up one trip to visit my mom when I didn't bring my vise. They work will on big stuff and they hold down to 22s. They do spit out hooks like their expensive cousin, if you aren't careful. If you have $50 to spend and need a vise, they are worth the price of admission.
  5. @stabgnid Nice fish on your opening day swap fly. Sorry no picture, but a great pattern. Fish liked it so much he kept it when he broke me off at the net! Recipe?
  6. Extra weighted Jig Head GRHE, Zonker streamers, and first pass at a Ace of Spades.
  7. And some bigger ones just for variety and color.
  8. Still working with my new set up. Found some Sz 22s while arranging my stuff. Yes I really need to get a better set of midge jaws, and work on wing height, but they worked for me none the less.
  9. Great set of Flies received today! Hope to get some of them wet this weekend. Bob, Thanks for hosting, I'll send you a note to cover the extra return postage.
  10. Is this the mysterious vice of years gone by finally coming to fruition?
  11. MSG RCVD, Sorry for the inconvenience. I won't trouble you with them again.
  12. Thanks, idea based totally on FliesbyNight's lovely roll top desk set up found here. My set up was discussed further down the thread. I have a second that I am either going to permanently mount to the table surface, and/or mount as a bobbin holder/gallows tool to the right out of the way. I like the way it holds, far more securely than the set screws on my other bases.
  13. quills form the new tying room. Brought the OTT lights up.
  14. Tying small, Sz 20 quill. Found I inherited some 22's, may try if I can get these consistient.
  15. Playing with my new space. 14, 16, 18, and 20's.
  16. yeah my corner of the world is not a bad place to be banished to!
  17. we live in North Myrtle Beach, not as "low" as Hilton Head but still the low country!
  18. So the photos didn't line up as I sequenced them, But I'm sure you can follow along. And tied the first dozen flies from size 4 down to these 14, 16, and 18's.
  19. So, the wife and I bought a place in upcountry SC nearer to our lovely trout streams. (see spring fever post). One of the joys of the new place is a blank canvas for a tying room. Here's what I've been able to do to date. From bank space, layout for a higher bench (I find I have a tendency to crouch at my "normal tying desk") Prep and layout Bench and initial clutter.
  20. Poopdeck, The Bolt head is inside the chuck, below the collet. I maxed the collet open (1/2" bit rating) and dropped it in and then tapped it into place on the 1/4" hole through the board. There wasn't enough space for a lock washer inside, which I considered, as it has tight tolerances, but it fits and holds very well. The threaded portion extends downward through the cutting board to a fender washer and then the nut. I kept making the recess deeper on the underside until it was below flush. The Chuck is threaded, but it looked like a 1/2 fine thread, which I couldn't find at the local HD or Lowe's. Attached a poor diagram that I hope helps. If not when I take it apart I'll take more photos.
  21. Based on the above topic I have played with the Drill Chuck idea. Teak cutting board from Marshalls ($14), Chuck from HF ($9) and $.67 worth of hardware from Home Depot. Hardest part is finding the right length 1/4- 20 bolt. Some are too long and would stick out, others too short and would require way to much counter sinking. One fender washer on the top side allowed for 100% clearance below with countersinking for fender washer and nut on bottom. I started with a smaller cheaper board and also tested counter sinking the collar. Overall, not displeased. A quick run through of the vises and they all work. Need to work on height next.
  22. Very cool. A while back when I was considering a similar venture (which I did not pursue) I came across this from Davie McPhail. Perhaps another alternative for you? Good luck and looking forward to seeing how you progress.
