  2. hi get your self a hackle size guide that fits on the steam of your vice it will give you an idea of hackle size in relation to hook size then take one of your cock capes place it on your the tying area with the smaller end of the faceing downwards wide end faceing upwards the cut a piece of white cardabout one inch longer than the cape get a marker pen then lay the card besides the cape then imagin the cape is divided into three 1) from the bottom to about 3" up for size 20-16 flies so make a mark on the card about 3" from the bottom of the cape this will give you an approximiate hackle size for the size range mentioned 2) make another mark on the card 3" up from the first mark this will give you the size hackles for hook range 16-8 flies 3)from the second mark to the top of the cape these are your larger saddle hackles for lures or large palmered dry flies put another mark for the top of the cape this then is a home made hackle gauge 4) saddle capes for dry flies the long thin metz or hoffman or any saddle hackles for dry flies the wider saddle hackles are mainly for lures hope this helps regards Steve

  5. hi the other alternative is to thread the squirmy the material onto the hook like you would a worm then glue in place the other suggestion is to dub the thread and use less thread tenstion to follow on from this cut the squirmy material in half thread the front end on the hook like a maggot then tie thread to hook put some dubbing on thread and wrap forward then whip finish varnish then thread a suitable size tungsten bead on the push bead to the whipp finish then start the thread on the otherside of the bead then thread the other half of the sqirmey material onto the hook like a maggot slide up to the bead then dub thread wrapforward the whipfinish varnish or a tougher material is silicone tubing try and get the soft tubing in a variety of colours but I think using a suitable size tungsten bead would add to the action of the worm pattern hope this help's kind regards Steve

  7. hi not nessary to soften partridge feathers try stripping the fibres on side of the feather this will soften your hackle by reducing the bulk of hackle fibres no need to mess about softening the fibres with fluids when you strip the partridge hackle one side if your concerned about the hackle being brittle just wet your finger tips and gently draw the fibres trough your wet forfinger and index finger then smooth the tip cut a triangle in the end of the tip of the hackle then gently tie in then fold the hackle backwards as you wrap you just need to practice the tenstion you apply to the hackle then whip finish hope this help's kind regards Steve
  8. Hi you make your on wax you will need a white candle & violin rosin cut a piece of white candle and break off a piece or rosin melt them in a sauce pen then let the liquid start to thicken and roll it into small pieces this is a form of cobblers wax but heat it up outside in an old saucepan as you won't be very popular with the wife it does dis colour the thread a little but that's ok as it turns the thread the wright colour for north country spiders coat the thread well as when your applying a find dusting of dubbing so you can see the colour of thread which shines through the light dusting of dubbing check out Rodger Fogg's Book North Country Spiders hope this helps Kind regards Steve 😉
  9. hi the best way to start tying your Woolly Bugger always start with the thread base tie in the the marrabou tail then tie in the wire rib for the body then the tip of the body hackle then dub your body dubbing to the thread then wind your dubbed thread to the front of the hook tapering then the body as you wind the dubbing forward to the thackleie off point leave your self about 1/16" gap then wind the the hackle forward tie off then counter rap the wire rib through the hackle making sure not trap the hackle fibres then whip finish hope this helps best regards Steve
  10. Hi keep the whip finish in the same direction as you wind your thread on the hook a tip that could help is leave a space between the hook eye say about 1/8" and limit your whip finish to two lots of three turns hope this helps.
