  1. Yes! This is the way to do it. I have a Fishpond sling that I can't stand and I need about 2% of what is in it. Doesn't help it's my pack for both fresh and saltwater fishing. I'm downsizing my pack this year and creating one for each purpose. Have to shop them in person, but I wouldn't mind this: medicinebow_chest.jpg
  2. That thing looks like an old, wet cigarette haha.
  3. You'll love SM on a fly rod! I'm going to try and pickup a 7wt this year for them, but my 5wt is a lot of fun with them too.
  4. That's awesome. Making your own vise isn't something just anyone could say. Now it just needs a name! I need to make some of these as well. Every time I go to making a dubbing loop i just get frustrated doing it without the right tools.
  5. Nice froggy. I think i'm going to give deer hair bugs a try once my bonefish trip is over.
  6. I'm starting to gather tying supplies for bonefish patterns. Have a trip coming up at the end of March and want to fish my own flies. My first bonefish pattern is Adam's Big Ugly. Good start and simple to tie. Any tricks to working with craft fur? Particularly gathering a clump off the "hide". Seemed hard to separate. Would have combed it but I don't own one!
  7. I never thought to put chenille on a bobbin. I'm def. doing this from now on. They should sell it all like that! Thanks for the tip.
  8. So I typically used polyleaders instead of sinking lines, but I'm thinking I may change that approach. Anyone any a preference of line type for smallmouth in lakes? Probably don't need to get down below 20'. Maybe an intermediate?
  9. Attempting to improve my fly photography. Borrowed my wife's camera, macro lens and a few flashes. Is it just me, or do buggers with bead chain eyes look awesome? How come you don't see more of these?
  10. Yeah, I can see myself just going with the flat bottom, maybe something thin over the ribs to even out the floor and thats all. I wouldn't be against a 24v system either. Can you start with a 12v and add another battery in the future, or are those motors dedicated to 12v or 24v. I'd go with a 9.9 too but there's the most and few ponds that allow that HP.
  11. Good to know! I was thinking that might be the case. He had the trolling motor mounted on the transom? I'd do it on the bow but I'm sure it'd go just the same with a little better steering.
  12. Thanks for the info Poopdeck. I wasn't going to go to crazy with additions, just thought that one deck between the bow and middle seat and some storage hatches below would be nice. But maybe I won't now that you've warned me. If I did get it, I would take it out a few times bare bones to get a feel for what I needed or wanted. Do you think you could get around well enough in a 14' with just a single electric trolling motor? I'm thinking just for those small 3hp limited ponds I might want to get in. Any brand loyalists from Tracker, Lowe, G3 or Alumacraft?
  13. Good to know! I was looking at the new SA Mastery Bass Bug line, which is overweighted by 2 sizes for it anyway. Now to find a decent reel...
  14. Anyone have a jon boat they fish from? I'm trying to gather enough information to make a compelling argument (to myself and my wife) as to why I need a boat. I guess I don't really NEED a boat, but I could get into so many more places. I have a paddle board that I use in saltwater to get out to the sandbars and fish, but this jon would be just for freshwater. Fishing on the SUP is a talent I'm still trying to perfect... I'm thinking a 1236, maybe a 1436. 3-4hp with additional trolling motor on bow. Ponds around here have low HP restrictions, anywhere from 3-6hp. It would kind of be set it up like those jon boats people turn into bass boat with a casting deck and maybe a few deck hatches.
  15. Truer words have never been spoken. (or should i said meme'd) I imagine it's only cheaper if you tie the same couple of patterns in a limited amount of colors and sizes. But where is the fun in that?
  16. Yeah, I actually don't have any kind of sinking line for freshwater for that reason. Polyleaders are all I need. Cheaper, easy to change and have little to no memory.
  17. Thats perfect. Simple and small to store
  18. You're right, I'm sorry. I fish kettle ponds from shore (sometimes on SUP) on Cape Cod. I also have a 5wt and 9wt (striper rod), and adding the 7wt would allow me to do exactly what you describe. I really had a ton of fun catching them on my 5wt, but I want to throw bigger streamers or have a little extra rod if it's windy (which is always is here on Cape). They became mine too after this last summer. I'd hit the trout and Striper schoolies in spring, then move to smallmouth and panfish all summer, then back to trout and schoolies in the fall. I'm really lucky to have such a large variety of fishing all year long.
  19. yes, beautiful. one more reason i need a lathe to play around with
  20. Hey guys. Really looking forward to warmer weather and getting back to smallmouth fishing. I've caught some on my 5wt with small buggers, but am looking to throw bigger streamers at them and am in the market for a 7wt. Thinking about picking up one of the old Orvis Clearwaters while they're on sale and available. I wanted to hear what you like to use for smallmouth fishing including: - Rod weight/length - Lines - Leaders - Flies Thanks in advance!
  21. Makes sense. Is there a special name for these flies? Thanks mikechell!
  22. Why would someone build a fly like this? With so much bare shank. Benefits?
  23. I don't think you should stop yourself from achieving bigger goals because you have this romantic view of what work should be. Study hard, challenge yourself. Be smart with your money and retire early, then tie and fly all you want, wherever you want. But that's just my over-analytical opinion...
