  1. I tie flies for sale. I sell them for between $3.75 and $15.00 each depending on how big and pretty they are. I have a special circumstance though. Because I was on TV ( I was on a show called "Forged In Fire") some people think I'm a big deal. People come in from all over the place to take a picture with me and get a tour of our shop. I'm really not that big of a deal though, you can just ask my wife . We also own an art gallery and I sell them as art not necessarily for fishing with. I'm not suffering under the misconception that my flies more special than any I've seen on this site but people like them. I would never consider production tying for wholesale, but if I did, I think I would set up six vises on a Lazy Susan type thing (that locks in place) so that when I had a particular material or tool in my hand I could do six flies with it at a time instead of just one before I had to put that material or tool down and pick up something else. One more thing, because I sell a few flies in our store, I'm able to write off all my fly tying stuff as a business expense, and my fishing as product research. Now here's the disclaimer, I'm not an accountant or a lawyer but I have an accountant and a lawyer that advise me. Before you do what I do, consult yours.
  2. I can't remember saying, or hearing anybody say "wow, nice new washing machine" Vises on the other hand, that's different.
  3. The insects I have will eat and do eat the follicles of every dead, feathery, hairy and furry thing in my house, shop and fly tying room. They are the larva of a little white moth. They have eaten the follicles of the American Sable fur coat I gave my mother, they are eating my bear fur coat. Both tanned leather. They ate my whole feather collection, including the feathers themselves, I had only quills left (I assume there was some grease still on there). They are insatiable, moth balls stop them, salt slows them down. Borax may repel them but ya can't scatter the stuff everywhere. Once the follicles are gone, the hair falls away from the hide and you have a loose pile of hair, mostly unusable for anything but dubbing (for those species that are useful for dubbing). The best I can do is store everything I don't want eaten in big totes with moth balls in them.
  4. I have a friend sending me some late season deer hides from Wisconsin (free), I'll let you know how long the belly hair is when I get them. I checked the belly hair on the Sitka black tails from here, they didn't have much white hair at all, it was just under two inches long though.
  5. I ordered a few different kinds to try, I will let you know what I think after I try them out. Thanks everybody for your input.
  6. OH my Gosh. They are sure pretty. I really admire your skill and attention to detail.
  7. I don't know much about what deer hair is good for what flies, but I do know this. Northern deer have thicker belly hair, and hair in general than southern deer. I bet if you get to know someone who hunts a late hunt in the north you could get some 2 inch belly hair. I don't have any right now or I'd share with you. I will be on the look out for some though.
  8. Very cool. I'm afraid those kinds of vises are above my skill level. I gotta stick to the simple stuff. Looks like you'll have a Merry Christmas. Well I'm not Oliver Edwards either and certainly I don't "need" another vise. Honestly I just like the design. All part of the obsession of catching fish on the fly - Well, I don't smoke, drink or use drugs, I don't cheat on my wife, I'm kind to small children, animals and women. I guess I could use a couple of new vises. Your vise has become your vice- Yes, I'm afraid it has. And I'm in deep. I don't think I have it as bad as some of you though.
  9. I like to buy old fly boxes and have some interesting stuff. Classic flies and other things. None of them are by famous tiers though. Very cool.
  10. Why belly hair? Because it's white? or are there other reasons?
  11. There's those jays, I was hoping I'd see the rest of them.

  14. We don't have bass up here and that's one of the things I miss after moving here, but I really miss the sunfish fishing. You know the big hand size ones, and the crappie.
  15. That's bad, and you got all those kids on your lawn. Geash, you might need some time in the fly tying room to relax.
  16. Mark, the jigs were tied for a fellow in IN who will be targeting Smallmouth bass with them. The teasers are going in my boxes for now, but are used primarily for Striped Bass in combination with bucktail jigs, spoons, or other lures. Used with fly tackle, anything that will grab a streamer fly that size. I live next to Lake Marion in SC, so will likely use them for LM bass or the Striped Bass in the lake. I was thinking bass, or pike on the jigs. Up here, the streamers are classic sockeye and coho flies. Very nice.
  17. I've finished my Adams and am working on hoppers now. I will show pitchers when I get the camera charged up.
  18. I do believe some of the members, here, have Archaeopteryx feathers in their collections ... that they collected themselves. Maybe Sandflix would want to trade some of his mammoth hair for some of those feathers.
  19. I'm glad we don't get all the bad weather up here that you guys get down there.
  20. These are nice, what are you fishing with them?
