  1. On the proportion part of tying . I did and still do on some flies ,is to make tick marks with marker on the hooks shank of were I want my start and stops . I have as gone as far as to use a small machinist rule to measure out my halfs , thirds. And on the dubbing try making the amount of dubbing twisted on the the thread taper. With the thread hanging down as you twist the dubbing make it tighter ( with less dubbing)at the shank and taper it a little thicker (little more dubbing ) as you get closer to the bobbin . So as you wrap the thread it will help build that tapered body as it is wrapped foward . And dont think you need to use all of the dubbing you twisted if you get to your stop point just peel remove the extra. And as for the ribbing I use gold thin wire and as for the heads you'll get it I still have problems with to much at times. I just try to remind myself "Keep the wrap to minimal" and if you use head cement or nail hardner you dont need a lot of whipp finish steve
  2. sound about what we use out here in Utah for brown and rainbow I wouldn,t go with out a couple diffirent sized pheasent tail nymps bead & no beadhead. You could try a renegade , maybe a stone fly or two brown , blk and a light yelllow. steve
  3. After I tie the buck tail in good and secure. I'll shape the butts to a taper to the eye of the hook , hopefully the buck flares enough when you tie it in , to pre shape the head . Then I like to use some super glue to quickly fill the butts in so the thread doesn't fall in to the butts. Then I just keep shaping the head to final shape with the thread. Then when Im done I'll put one coat of Devon epoxy on to fill in thread , and before it sets to much I add the eyes. Do a final coat shortly after then let cure. steve hope that helps if not Ill try to take some photo
  4. First , I'd like to thank Troutbum7 for the inspiration :headbang: I could get my marabou to work right , so i decided to try buck tail. ( first two ) Then one day at work I was talking to a guy about Tiger Muskie fishing and what he used for lures and he said he likes to use a buck tail with a spinner . So I offfered to tie one up for him , and here it is . I added a hook in tube area. Hope you guys like , take any comments ,beatings, etc. steve

  6. Had you thought of talking to your local taxidermy ? might get lucky come hunting season steve
  7. I agree with the guys , flies look good for the first go at it . As for the legs I start out with long when I tie them in then just trim to length, I go to about were body and wing case meet. And some times the legs dont make it on the fly. steve
  8. I agree with alot said also . I think you should do the "sets" of what works in the area for the most part. You could also have some other ones , you could do as customs ( patterns that you have material for) and have a list if the person wants to chose. Plus I think 2.00 is a fair price (introductory price ) maybe little more for custom . Good luck hope it works for you steve
  9. Congrats to everyone !!!!! AWSOME JOB... Planning for next year. Steve

  12. JJD -- Nice set of "Bassies", I have a question (which Im sure that has asked before but) is there a page or writing in the forum on how to get the hair colors in the patterns that you guys get? I know how to do the usual stacking , but its the "grey on top and red on bottom thing ". Thanks for any info Steve
  13. Michael - Nice flies :headbang: Joe- to answer your hackle ?? I used saddle, (the pattern calls for marabou) , I kept having problems with the marabou breaking on me. Steve

  19. Nicely done. I two like the adding of the turnings, and the lay out of the thread and the "small stuff" on the back side. :headbang: steve
  20. They look very good . And as my buddy would say, (as I asked him when I first started tying) was they"ll catch fish . And I found that the more I tie and try new patterns , the more I go and practice on the water . For I fish for the relaxing and fun part. Steve
  21. looks like redwing beat me to the punch line :hyst:
  22. From what I have seen in books and the web . Tube flies are becoming popular due to that the idea is, that with the hook is tied on to a leader that runs thru the tube , you can adjust hook size, or replace if damaged, with out having to tie different hooks sizes. Sound like they are many be used for Steelhead and Salmon, but Im looking at using the tube idea this coming summer for Bass and trying a few bass patterns on tubes. hope it give you a idea you could do a search for steelhead and / or salmon tube flies.
  23. Rawfish - Depending on what type of fly , I do about the same as Redwing. But if your looking for a short term idea, go to the BIG W :hyst: and get some of that foam poster board and cut strips about a inch wide, then just push the hook into foam thats exposed on the sides. It was a easy way I came up with to give some flies to a buddy .
  24. If you cant share with your friends , than who can ya with, :hyst:
  25. I had a simular problem I found for me was to switched to a tac ier wax so I could add more dubbing . Also for the dubbing I switched to (dont tell :hyst: ) using natural red fox squirrel hair instead , it seems to give that more "hairy" look that the picture give. O and also I found that if the hair pulls off as Im rapping thread Id just stop hold thread tight with odd hand and rewrap dubbing on string Hope that helps.
