Lefty's Deceiver - Best saltwater fly pattern?
cheech replied to McFlyLures's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
But the original posting, I said my opinion and I wasn't offended. Aren't I allowed to say why I tied it that way? Or should I just say "oh your right" every time? I really wasn't upset the first posting, I was upset when people after started coming down on me. I even said (sorry for being kinda defensive) right after responding. ??? SMH.... Keep on keeping on brother.- 82 replies

Unless you find yourself in a knife fight and realize you forgot your knife! I didn't say I don't carry knives. I ALWAYS have at least one on me One is always a clip-on, folding pocket knife. But I won't even spend $50.00 on a folder, let alone close to $500. I think everyone implied as much... You don't even buy normal tying thread!!!

I hear you on the tear mender. I use a Loon applicator bottle with a green tip. If there is a clog, I unscrew the tip and dig the clog out with a bodkin (it usually takes about 15 seconds), and if there is more of a clog I take the top off the bottle and dig it out with tweezers. The good thing about Tear Mender is that the clogs all glob up together and don't stick to the bottle at all. I have been using the same bottle for about 2 years now, and aside from a few clog repairs here and there, it's still going strong.

Lefty's Deceiver - Best saltwater fly pattern?

Unfortunately it's the internet, and that's how it works full moon, new moon, and everything in between. Also, I think the guy was plenty nice. He said that he liked your videos, and he didn't make any personal attacks. His argument was factual, and then he left it for you to read into (good, bad, or indifferent). In regards to civility, I have been of forums that are a LOT worse than this one, and fortunately users can either choose to stick around or leave. I haven't really witnessed anything that crossed the line on this forum, and it's why I rarely participate in many other forums anymore. They are either waaaaaay over moderated, or they just let anything fly. Personally I prefer Facebook groups and Instagram to share flies and info...- 82 replies

This stuff is really good. For attaching eyes though... Tear Mender or Zap Goo are the best. UV resins aren't the best for attaching eyes unless you encapsulate the whole head.

Lefty's Deceiver - Best saltwater fly pattern?
cheech replied to McFlyLures's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Ok.... I'll chime in here. It seems like every time McFly posts a video he asks for feedback. People give him feedback and about 50% of the time he gets super defensive about his videos. In my opinion, as long as there are no personal attacks, all of the feedback here on this fly was justified. Also, putting the word "variant" after the title is actually a really good way to avoid these types of conversations. Some people get really hung up on a proper way of doing things... Will it catch fish? yes. Is it technically a "Deciever" as designed by Lefty? No. Is it a Deciever Variant? Yes. Like JSzymczyk said with the clouser, just because it has dumbbell eyes, it doesn't make it a clouser. It seems silly, but it actually makes a lot of sense. Another tactic is to not let comments like those get under your skin so much. OR... Maybe you take the comments to heart and turn them into learning opportunities. I personally don't really care that a recipe is followed exactly, but there are enough guys on the interwebs who do care, and they also like to argue.- 82 replies

He has a website, too. Here's my version. Very nice work there Jeff. That color of diamond dub has been absolutely killer on everything from mayfly nymphs to chernobyl ants.

It's a good thing it wasn't a Renzetti;) We have met with the Wolff people who now produce the vises, and they do an excellent job. The Apex is my go to midge vise.

I tie one like it too. I also have a video tutorial.

This... The issue with holding an eyes on with super glue is that it cures rock hard, and when it is cast into something like a rock, the glue breaks. Tear Mender stays flexible. Shoe goo is also a good option but it's less forgiving and a bit messy. Zap a Gap makes a product called Zap Goo that is not a cyanoacrylate and is also great for eyes.

My take on poly fibers (EP, Congo, macrame yarn, etc.) for streamers is that they aren't the greatest for movement in the water. I actually love EP fibers for poly wings on dry flies though, and I have been using them for everything from midges to big chernobyls. Another thing to consider is that you get a literal crap ton of materials for the price with the EP stuff. If you are looking for a synthetic material that has surprisingly good movement, check out Steve Farrar blend fibers, and/or flash & slinky. I usually throw those on a hook and make a head out of Bruiser Blend dubbing for a very simple fly that moves like crazy.

Yep. Just don't tie at night.

However different resins need a different wavelength of uv light to make it cure hard. You might want to get the light that loon recommends and it could help that issue. That actually isn't true. The manufacturers say that so they can charge an arm and a leg for their lights. In actuality any UV (actually violet) light will work, and the more power you have the faster it cures. True UV light is invisible to human eyes.

In the states a 2oz bottle of Solarez is $21... Loon is $19 for 0.5oz... Get a lot more in the solarez for basically the same price. Never heard of the other brand you mentioned. Loon is $19 for .5 oz? MSRP is $13 Solarez is good stuff, and has a good price point. Probably my second favorite behind Loon. Hey send me a link to where you buy it for $13. My local fly shop sells it for $19.99. http://store.flyfishfood.com/Loon-UV-Clear-Fly-Finish-Thick-p/lnuvtk.htm Also, the light that you have is just a rebranded Ultrafire 501-b that you can get for $15 on Amazon. You say that the lights from China aren't good? Those lights are made in China. So thats a much better deal for the loon then my fly shop was offering. I will have to talk with them. Either way, $13 for 0.5 oz and $21 for 2 oz, I think the 2 oz is a much better deal with solarez, unless you don't plan on using all that quantity. As for the light, wow! I didnt know that! I mean its quite powerful. Are you sure its a rebranded one of that? I mean could that "ultra fire" have different internals and just "look" the same? Either way, Its the best UV light I've ever owned. I was not wrong in what I said. I have bought some from china for $7, and the piece of crap broke in less than a month. Its also a better light than those little pen lazor lights that I see from loon. Those things don't work well when curing larger surfaces. But that is a preference thing. Pull out your battery again and look at the brand;) Loon doesn't sell lazer lights.

Uh... its pretty well known that products coming from china usually have issues anyway. This is nothing new. Their product control is not that great. I personally have never used the Lina resin brand, but I have used other resins from china and they were crap. If a company doesn't want their credibility hurt, then they should make a great product. If Lina is a great product, then there credibility will be restored when people try them. But most products coming from china are cheaply made. Its well known that is the case, and people don't need me telling them that is the case. I simply said, its one of the most reasonably priced products that is american made. Generally (not always) american made products are quite high quality. I was talking about your credibility. The general statement that I was talking about was "Chinese products that don't work very well." and to add to this... " Uh... its pretty well known that products coming from china usually have issues anyway. This is nothing new." Your light that you rave about - is from China.

Also.... You say that the cheap stuff from China doesn't really work very well? Have you tried Solarez side by side with any other products? The Lina resin that was posted on this forum a while back is actually very capable product that cures with all of the lights that I have. It's $2.50 for .5 oz. Those blanket statements can hurt credibility.

Is your fly tying desk near a window?

If you are looking for cheap, you can't beat this stuff. $6 per bottle http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018CW7KA/ref=s9_simh_gw_g194_i1_r?ie=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0VK9M7G7GS7QKK2BSQWB&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=5d23eaf6-6278-49c1-b6df-7de0cb9b3a26&pf_rd_i=desktop

$142 is waaaaay too high unless it's some cree cape. You can get a "regular" saddle or cape with tons of size 18 hackles in it for about $35. http://store.flyfishfood.com/category-s/1891.htm
-
I fish a lot of G Gnats and I find that a hackle that is too long impedes hookups too much. You could have tied this same fly on a size 14 short shank hook and it would probably fish better due to extra hook gap. Also, as has been stated here already, you can get really good quality hackle for a great price. You can get a Whiting half cape for $26 to $35 that will tie flies down to about size 26. If a #18 G Gnat were my go to, I'd definitely buy a Whiting half saddle. Plenty of size 18's and you can get 3 flies out of one feather. They cost $35 and will tie hundreds upon hundreds of flies.

100% agree. I wish I would have done that back in the day.
