Okay I know the bobbin holder. Although it is more than difficult to thread. I can’t even get wire through it. Likely wax in it. I can blow through it… what are the three small silver things? Anyone hazard a guess at the jigsaw / metal two pieces? Thanks.

Hi Recently bought off ebay an assortment of fly tying hooks among which are two packs of Drennan "Longbelly" hooks, sizes 6 and 14. I cannot find any reference as to what longbelly hooks are for; clearly their shape is for a specific purpose but cannot find out anything about them (not even from Drennan) can anyone help Alan

Hi everyone, So I’m seriously Considering buying a CAE Vice. After talking with Charlie for a good while, I got the impression that he is a really nice man. I know there is a bit history here with the vice, and I do get the controversy, but I would like some advice if at all possible. I believe there is a few people on the forum that own a number 2 vice. My question, which will determine whether I can buy the vice or not, is the hook range that it will comfortably tie. I know from a few videos I’ve seen online, it will handle very small hooks (22 and smaller). My concern is the other end of the spectrum. I now tie some large saltwater patterns, ranging up to a 6/0, and possibly larger. Can anyone confirm from tying on these vices if that will be possible. From what I’ve seen, I’d say it is, but would just like piece of mind before I order. Cheers, Chris

Invitation to the 33rd Slovenian Open Fly Tying Championship 2020 Fly tying section of the Slovenian Fishing Association is announcing the 33rd annual Slovenian Open Fly Tying Championship for the year 2020, very likely the oldest fly tying contest in the World. Tiers participate in the following categories: 1. Dry Flies 2. Nymphs & Wet Flies 3. Streamers 4. Realistic Flies Conditions of participation are as follows: 1. Each flytier is allowed to compete in each of the categories with one fly only, which must be sent in 2 samples. The chosen fly should not be a part of the tiers participation in any of his/her previous tying competitions. 2. Package with each sample should contain: - Name of the fly (Known or new); - Password to prove the fly's origin (it can be anything, formed with letters and/or numbers); - Description of used materials (Recipe); - Size and type of the hook used; - Name of the animal/fly that is being imitated (if possible a photography as well! *This only considers category - Realistic Flies) Jury will automatically reject all samples that will contain natural insect parts (such as wings, legs, etc) as a part of the fly! 3. In the accompanying letter tyers must write their names, addresses, e-mails, telephone numbers, country for which they compete, names of the flies and passwords. Letter should be in the enclosed envelope together with the fly. Copies of those letters must be kept by the authors until the end of the competition. 4. For the judging of flies jury will consider the following criteria: - Proportions of the fly, - firmness and technical aspect of the tying, - suitability of the chosen materials, - general impression and - innovativeness; - in the 4th category the “level of imitation” will be the most important criterion! 5. Jury holds the right to classify samples in different categories if necessary! 6. Decision of the jury is final! 7. Please send flies in a package that prevents them to be destroyed during shipping! 8. Deadline for sending your patterns to us (date on the post stamp should not be later than): 31st January 2020 9. I have google searched and nothing of any significance ever comes up for tying beginner bass flies. I have done some searching within this forum to find it but haven't had much success. Can anyone tell me some good largemouth bass patterns to tie for beginner fly tiers? and possibly good links to recipes for them? I have just scraped the surface of fly tying so I don't know much yet but I am learning quickly. Thanks in advance.

I am posting this on fly tyers forum because I feel people who tie their own flies know the best when it comes to fly fishing. I am confused right now with emerger flys nymphs spinners dry flys and spent flys egg laying flys i dont know when or why to use them. I know eggs are laid and turn into nymphs and nymphs emerge into dry flys and then spinners then spent flys but why would you fish a dry fly vs an emerger because its not like every nymph emerges into fly at the exact same time... There will still be nymphs and emerges at the same time as flys that hatched earlier are spent and dying how long do these flys live. When do you fish each type and what triggers fly hatches how do you choose what type of fly to use during its hatch? I am not a newbie just need this cleared up? And like all winter midges are hatching??? I just don't get it.

Hey Everyone, Just signed up, what great site! I've been on here a bit for research in my fly tying endeavours. I would consider myself a novice fly tyer at best. Just getting away from the basic patterns and getting into tying streamers. I have a few questions on these patterns I came across. I love these flies but am having trouble figuring out the material used on these 2 patterns. I think the materials are mostly synthetics but I am not too familiar on what they are. The Gulf Coast & Texas Councils of the IFFF, annually co-sponsor the "North Toledo Bend Rendezvous". This is the best "hands on" gathering of fly tyers in the South! Rendezvous is held the first weekend of November at North Toledo Bend State Park near Zwolle, LA (Nov. 4-6th). This will be the 28th Rendezvous (since 1989) of this gathering of fly tyers representing Federation clubs from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and beyond. Hello everyone. My name is Chris and I have a tying shop on the eastern end of the north fork of Long Island, Ny. I started the business by tying buck tails and am now getting more and more into tying and offering mostly saltwater flies to my customers. I deal with several charter boats and guides here on long island and in Connecticut and just picked up a new customer in san Diego! Not sure how much help I will be to people as far as instruction goes but, if anyone has any questions for me I will do my best. Just because I tie/sell fly and components commercially, it certainly doesn't mean I have all the answers. The Schminnow was originally created by Norm Zeigler to fish snook on the small islands off of Florida. This fly resembles a large wooly bugger, but was originally tied with estaz. I myself have made some small edits to the fly and I call it the "super schminnow" its more flashy, has even more movement in the water, and has a weighted head for some jigging action. One of the reasons this fly works so great is that it can resemble a shrimp, or a baitfish. So its great for multiple fishing situations. Hey guys, this is a super quick video on tying in dumbbell eyes. I plan on doing a few of these quick tips type of video's. They will be under 2 minutes (this one is only 1 and a half minutes). I am stuggling to understand how to do whip finishes by hand. I have been forced to just tie a simple square knot and super glue it to keep it secure. I have tried looking it up on youtube, but I can't seem to transfer right handed whip finish to left handed whip finish. Can somone help me with whip finishing by hand for a left handed person?

Greetings to all, I have read numerous books and magazine articles and all of them say you should never put down your scissors when tying. And I have tried to do that, but I have large hands, and all the scissors i have gotten to date, have not had large enough finger holes to make it comfortable to hold them all the time. Usually, I end up on my feet doing a wierd contortion dance just trying to get the scissors back down over my knuckles so I can cut something. I have found it much easier to set the scissors I am using down, but I was thinking there might be a brand of scissors out there, that you might know of, that have larger finger holes for people like me who have large hands. If anyone knows of such a brand of scissor, i would sure like to know about it. Thank you all.
