So I just tied my first deceiver and tried to follow the youtube video of Lefty tying it. I'm not crazy about the video because he isn't very clear about portions and things like that. It kind of reminds me of my grandmothers cooking recipes (add a little of this and let it cook for a while). The fly looks outrageously long. It measures about 7 inches and is tied on a size 1 hook. Please critique this fly and help me get better. Here are my questions: I am tying with strung rooster saddles. If I want them shorter can I cut the ends off before I tie it in or trim the tips after it is tied on or what? How do I get the red throat part to stay together instead of flaring out? Can you recommend a video tying a classic lefty's deceiver that has a good amount of detail. There are a lot of videos but each have there own way of doing things so I was hoping you folks could point out which ones don't stray to far from the classic pattern. Thanks

This is a great fly for saltwater applications, but also can be used for larger freshwater fish like bass, salmon, or pike. While they aren't the most easy to tie, they aren't difficult either, and they really do catch fish. They move so nicely in the water. This is a variation of the original that was tied by lefty kreh. Hook: Gamakatsu SS15 hook size 1/0, but any long shank saltwater hook will work. Tail: White saddle hackle Thread: Danville 210 waxed in blue Body: Pearl braid, or silver tinsel Wings: White and blue buck tail Gill: Red calf tail, or red crystal flash eyes: Stick on eyes, preferably flat, but I used 3D eyes which work as well. Epoxy: Solarez "Bone dry" UV curing resin.

The cone head marabou deceiver is a lot like my other video on the square tail marabou deceiver, however this has a weighted cone head to make it sink and have a jigging action. The marabou makes it have lots of great action, and the buck tail protects the softer marabou from getting ripped apart. The square tail marabou deceiver is a great baitfish imitation. Its got a wide profile, and moves nicely in the water due to the marabou. The marabou is protected from being ripped up by the more durable buck tail surrounding it. This fly can be tied in a number of colors, and sizes. Making it great for a large number of fish species.
