Ruger #1 Info

Recommended Posts

I have been an avid collector and dabbled in most of the upgrades/accurizing, and custom build options out here.  I have sold off most of them -- over 40 at my peak -- and now am down to a few -- one of which goes into the box with me.

Anyway, if any of you want to talk about your itch for #1s I'd be glad to do what I can to help you.   Just remember that when I was first in the hunt for them the cost was crazy low by today's MSRP.

Curious as to your request for the one #1. Why not give it to someone who will appreciate it and the gesture by you.

Supposed to be to Rocco. Checked the wrong box. The whole day has been like that!

Always wanted one of those. What caliber?

Its a 280 Rem No 1B -- my first and best. It never missed or needed a second shot on a deer including my best -- a 16 pointer. We'll see which of my two sons gets it out of the box after the funeral.  But I'm not going w/o it.  The ashes of my best bird dog also will go along.

I've had three No 1s.  One, a 25-06 was accurate, but the other two were 1.5" guns or maybe worse.  There's only so much you can do to improve them, not like a bolt gun. They're pretty and plenty accurate enough for hunting but based on my experience they're more show than go.

Those #1 actions can be very accurate!

I retired after 35 years as a tool and die maker. We had total access to a fully equipped modern machine shop and used work on our personal projects after work hours.

A mentor of mine re-barreled a #1 with a heavy barreled stainless Olympic tube chambered in 6.5 06. It’s the first action re-barrel I was involved with. He fluted the barrel and mounted an adjustable muzzle break.
That gun with Sierra match points (138 gr. if I remember correctly) is the most accurate rifle I’ve witnessed at the range. Tried to buy/trade him for it, no dice. Dime sized 5 shot 100yd groups. I personally measured a sub 1.5”,  3 shot group at 300 yards once.

I purchased the reamer set from him and re-bareled  a Mossberg 810 30-06 bolt action rifle that was given to me on my 12th birthday. It shoots very well, ( after a professional trigger job ) but not as good as that Ruger#1. Ten deer and two elk were harvested with that rifle as an 06. One deer as a 65-06 then it was retired.

The plan is to give that 6.5 bolt action to my Son and grand son. It’s a very good shooter, but the 26.5” medium weight barell with added muzzle break make it to long and heavy to be much of a useful hunting tool.

Not sure what’s legal these days in the amateur gunsmith area these days, but back then there was a lot of gun mods happening.
