April Flies From the Vise

Just finished up some bass flies.  They are hybrid of three different patterns I tie.  I just tied these eight up, if they work I'll tie some more.

Hook - Ahrex Trout Predator Long  Size 1/0

Thread - White or Yellow

Tail - Zonker Strip

Body - Estaz twisted with either Saddle Hackle or Schlappen 

Thorax(?) - Half a spinner bait skirt

Head - Stonfo Soft Heads #2

Eyes - Fish Skull Living Eyes, 7 mm

Philly… great looking bugs.  Everyone of them would work great for snook, reds, trout and other fish in the Everglades.

Bead - Gold brass or tungsten
 
Weight - Lead/lead free wire (optional)
 
Thread - Black 
 
Tail - Peacock sword fibers
 
Ribbing - Oval silver tinsel
 
Body - Peacock herl
 
Hackle - Brown 
 
Wing case - Lemon wood duck, clipped

Half and half

Hook - Size 14 2XL with a slight bend

thread - burnt orange 70 ultra

Tail - gray UV ice dub and wood duck fibers

Body - olive dyed Pheasant tail fibers

thorax - Lt olive dubbing

Post - poly yarn

hackle - Grizzly

Bullethead Chernobyl Skwala II (Ludwig variation)

Made entirely from petrochemical byproducts; easiest of the lot to tie.  Rear feelers superfluous; just for giggles.

hook - WFC Model 6 #8
thread - Uni 6/0 camel 
tag - medium tinsel holo black 
feelers - medium rubber brown
abdomen - Ice Dub brown
overbody/head - 1mm foam brown
wing - Congo Hair baitfish grey
indicator - 1mm foam orange
legs - medium rubber brown

ALL VERSIONS

Hook - Any straight, curved or jig wet fly hook, 8-14 (Mustad 3906, 10 used in all here)

Thread - black or to match (black used here)

Body - any color mop fly, brown, olive, tan and chartreuse are some examples (grey used here)

Mop #1 - grey dub used to cover thread wraps behind brass bead

Mop #2 - partridge soft hackle collar

Mop #3 - brown rabbit collar tied using a dubbing loop

Mop #4 - peacock ice dub collar, tied using a dubbing noodle

Mop #5 - brown rabbit collar using the split thread method

I'm teaching a guy in Anchorage, AK how to start tying and this pattern was chosen to develop different skills.

A better effort, made easier with 8/0 Uni, but I still gotta get the lumps out of the abdomen underbody next time... 🙄
