May Flies From The Vise

Black Stone - This pattern (sometimes also known as the Dark Stone) was developed by Traverse City, Michigan fly tyer Art Winnie sometime between the 1920's to the '50's for use on the early season black stonefly hatches - February through April in Art's area.

Hook - Mustad dry fly, 10-12

Body - grey yarn

Rib - yellow monocord

Wings - grey goose, divided and tied down along the back

Head - peacock herl, tapered

Where do you source these patterns you post...and are they from a collection or do you tie them?

Senter’s Teacher (variation)

Kept the rear end of the original intact; the rest is a bit different.

hook - WFC Model 3 #10
thread - Uni 6/0 camel
rib - tying thread
tail/body - deer hair
wing - Congo Hair shiner tan
thorax - Ice Dub Hare’s Ear
hackle - grizzly
shoulder - pheasant rump

Kim ran out of flash bulbs and film for his Polaroid in 1972 so he ties the flies, sends them to a friend who photographs them and sends Kim the pictures. I bet Kim really misses those instant picture days of old.

The patterns are from different on-line sources - the ties are mine own.  Well, at least my decent attempts!

I'm building a database of fly patterns - mostly from sites in danger of going off-line - so they are not lost.  I have a little over 3000 patterns now and will end up with another 2000 by the time I finish.  It's a great resource when I have newer tyers join my swaps.
