Fly Tying

Recommended Posts

Hello I am completely new to fly tying and the only thing I know is that this is a Nymph. Could you guys help Identify what size hook this is and what your best guess on the weight of the ball is? Looking to get into fly tying but I know nothing. Thanks!

For hook and bead, you'll save lots with wholesale fly co, who offers a quality product

https://www.wholesaleflycompany.com/product-page/model-19-heavy-jig-hooks-60-degree-vertical-eye-100pk

Swipe right on their pic to figure out size and matching bead (also through wfc at good prices)

But their hooks aren't black

If you need a black hook, I think JS Stockard has it, and you can call them for help with sizing. They're good on basic materials, too, but no bargain on postage

Looking at it I think it may be an actual jig, rather than a jig hook with a black bead on it.   Hook either size 12 or 10.  Weight could be 1/32 oz but jigs are made down to 1/100 oz.

Also what gage lead wire should I use for a size 12 or 10 hook?

I you are asking about reproducing the fly below, it does NOT have any lead wire under the fly body. Lead wire would thicken the fly body. Using wire that is the diameter of the hook shank would mean that you would be wrapping material over a combined hook and wire diameter that is 3 times the diameter of just the hook.

There are lots of options for learning to tie nymphs.

I like this free resource from Steven Ojai in the Sierras. Lots of other good stuff in there, too.

Here's his page on Frenchies

Here's an interviewer with George Daniel on selecting nymph patterns for Euro nymphing style fly fishing (the type of fly you posted).

Ah okay thanks, now looking at it I do believe there is no wire under it. Quick question then how would one glue the feather onto the hook? Will supper glue work?
