La Belle (variant)

Need to clean it up a bit on the next one.  I have no idea what the white bits are on the black thread.  Will have to wax the thread before using it next time.  Head still needs a coat of polish.

Hook: #10, 2xl

Thread: white, 70D

Rib: Coates & Clark metallic silver thread

Body: blue floss

Head: black thread, 70D

Beard: blue saddle hackle

Wing: white duck quill

from Favorite Flies and Their Histories by Mary Orvis Marbury:

"This bass fly was the first made by C.F. Orvis in 1879, and when tried was found to be excellent in some waters for black bass. For a long time the fly had no name, until one day somebody said it "reminded him of a pretty girl in a white muslin dress and a blue sash, it ought to be taking;" so then and there it was named La Belle."

Her book shows a tag of red floss, tail of married red over white slips, light blue body, rib of oval silver tinsel, and a light blue hackled collar with white quill wings.

Ray Bergman in Trout uses red wool for a tail and a rib of flat silver tinsel, with a body and beard of light blue and white quills for wings.

This is a great looking fly. I don’t see the white bits your referring to but if your seeing them and they are bothering you, just hit them with a black sharpie before coating.
